The Hampshire & Isle of Wight Air Ambulance (HIOWAA) has been scrambled to the Island following a serious road traffic collision at Yaverland today (Thursday).
Emergency crews were first called to Yaverland Road near the entrance to Sandown Bay Holiday Centre at around 11:00 following reports of a road traffic collision.
Several resources from the Isle of Wight Ambulance Service, including an Operational Commander, were quickly dispatched to the scene, joining units from Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary at crash site.
Such was the severity of the incident, HIOWAA has landed behind Yaverland Sailing and Boating Club.
It is understood that the collision has involved a motorcycle and a Mercedes, it remains unclear how the collision occurred.
Yaverland Road is currently blocked as a result of the collision, with motorists advised to avoid the area for the time being.
Southern Vectis route 8 buses, as well as the Downs Breezer, are currently diverting via Morton Common.
It is anticipated that the poorly patient, believed to be a male, is to be transferred to a mainland hospital.
UPDATE @ 13:30 – The casualty has been airlifted to Southampton General Hospital with a serious leg injury, believed to be a broken leg.
Yaverland Road remains closed between Yaverland Car Park, and Sandown Bay Holiday Park.
Spoke to a officer blocking the road, said the man will live, it’s a motorcycle accident believed to be involving a breezer bus, however it’s unclear what the man’s injuries are
Between fires and RTAs it has clearly been a busy day for the men and women of the emergency services today.
For years this has been an accident in the making

This location needs speed humps placed outside the
Holiday centre on both sides of the road to MAKE traffic
slow down near the entrance to the site.
When exiting the site if turning right it’s very dangerous
When exiting the site if turning left it is dangerous.
I cannot believe Highways don’t carry out road safety
checks.
I am surprised it’s taken so many years for an accident to
happen especially the way vehicles speed along this Road.
Whitecliff Bay campsite in Bembridge is another DEATH TRAP
when exiting the site.
Let’s hope the person is ok, so many accidents can be
prevented.
There are so many locations on the Island that are dangerous
Compton Bay car park being another one.
