A Freshwater Bay garden became the backdrop for a powerful new dance film as Isle of Wight community dance company Samphire marked its 10th anniversary.
Samphire, a contemporary dance company for mature adults, has celebrated its milestone anniversary with the release of We Rise – a film created in collaboration with Isle of Wight filmmaker Paul Windridge.
Originally inspired by photographs of sculptures, the project evolved into a celebration of the strength, resilience and creativity of women, with the choreography developed by members of the dance company themselves.
Michelle Hainsworth, director of Samphire, said:
“I am particularly proud of this piece, created by the dancers. It is a celebration of how they’ve grown in confidence and creativity.
“It’s always a pleasure to work with filmmaker Paul Windridge too. We value his expertise, artistry and support for Samphire.”
The film was shot in the garden of one of the dancers in Freshwater Bay before members of the group rounded off the day with a celebratory picnic.
Val, one of Samphire’s newer members, said:

The film can be viewed on Michelle Hainsworth’s website and will also be screened during a dance showcase at the Riverside Centre on 6th November.
The event will celebrate a range of dance opportunities available to older people on the Isle of Wight, including ballet, tap and Bollywood.
