Newport Rowing Club enjoyed another encouraging outing at Poole Regatta on Saturday (18th July), with 7 crews competing across a range of events – including a second successive victory over rivals Southampton that keeps the season-long championship battle alive.
Among those making their regatta debut were father and son Roly and Magnus Wilson in the single sculls, with Magnus stepping up to compete 4 years above his age group.
Chris Clarke and Huseyin Yolcu recovered well after a difficult start in the Junior Pair, but were unable to break into the top 3, while the Open Junior crew progressed through their heat to reach the final before also finishing outside the medal positions.
The women’s Novice crew, competing as a composite crew alongside Ryde, delivered an encouraging performance to finish as runners-up in their final.
Newport demonstrated its strength in depth in the Junior-Senior event by fielding 2 crews in the final. Riv Szawiel stepped up from the Junior crew to join newcomer Hal Collins alongside regulars Boris Hare and Jude Williams in the club’s ‘B’ crew.
In a closely contested race, they were narrowly denied a podium finish by Lymington, crossing the line in 4th place.
The club’s ‘A’ crew, however, secured a second consecutive victory over rivals Southampton, reducing the deficit in the season-long championship standings to 4-3 in Southampton’s favour.
With just 3 regattas remaining this season, the championship battle remains finely poised, with Newport firmly in contention for the title.
