Wootton Bridge Parish Council has asked residents for their views on a proposal for sideroads in Wootton to be made subject to a 20mph speed limit.
The response has so far been mixed with some suggesting it’s a good idea and others questioning whether it would even be enforceable.
However, it would appear that some residents would like to see a 20mph limit on some of the more major thoroughfares in the area such as the High Street and Park Road.
It is understood that representatives of Island Roads were present at a coffee morning held on Wednesday (27th September) to discuss the matter, along with Wootton’s Environmental Officer. Police were also going to attend the event but it is understood that they have had to rearrange for a later date in October.
What are your thoughts on 20mph zones? Let us know in the comments…

Sorry I don’t speak in Welsh.
It is not enforceable, Newchurch is a typical example..
Doesn’t even require a speed limit.
You can use:
*also protects the public from cars swearing onto a pavement
Better idea, teach people road safety.
Or Pan Lane in Newport.
This would literally ruin my life! I have to drive thorough Wootton every day. Twice!
Why ask the locals? Ask us who just go through!
“Literally ruin my life”
Quite a statement to drive at a slower speed.
What a tvvat…
Screw everyone’s safety for your convenience…
Ruin your life!
where on earth do you need to get to that’s so urgent?
Drive at 20 in Brading and within seconds a massive tailback. Vast majority ignore any speed limits.
I don’t actually have a problem with the short stretch of 20mph road in Brading or Godshill for that matter.
Try walking as a pedestrian along either of those and you’ll understand why they’re 20mph. Narrow roads, narrow pavements, pedestrians close to the road, not a good mix. And, try walking along either road with kids in tow and it’s actually very scary, even with cars at 20mph.
Plus, in Brading at least, there’s a Primary School at the top of the High Street with the added bonus of a convenience store on the opposite side of the road (sweets and all that!).
I know of several people who’ve been clipped by wing mirrors etc on both those roads.
Wooton, on the other hand, is not really in the same category.
Everyone I see go through Brading does 30mph+
Unless speed cameras are erected, Speeding will never STOP!
Just like idiots driving down Rosds and Streets with NO entry signs
and Numpty’s still drive down them.
20mph will be 1st and 2nd gear in most cars, hardly fuel/emissions efficient.? I’d put the speed limit up to 40mph to get the engines running nicely
So that’s an 80% increased chance of killing a pedestrian if they get hit by a car compared to 30mph, isn’t it?
I assume then that the road you’re talking about has wide pavements with well lit crossings and properly protected bus stops?
Because it’s either low speeds or good infrastructure. Can’t have high speeds and bad infrastructure. It’s 2023, lets game some civilised standards.
Would be 0% if the pedestrian looks where they are going and use’s the green cross code . Instead of having their face buried in their mobile phones. How about taking responsibility for your actions
Because humans are known to never make mistakes just if they try, right?
I guess you would be happy for any traffic violation to be instant prison sentence for the driver? I mean, if they just look where they are going and use the Highway Code surely there will be 0% infractions 😉
I welcome you to take a stroller with your baby and have a feel how safe you feel with cars at 20mph vs 40mph near you, I dare you.
The coastal military road is 60mph speed limit but there are bits of the road which are quite safe to do say 130mph.
There are other 60mph speed limit roads on the island which are really narrow and twisty, these can only be driven at 30 to 40 mph safely.
It should be down to driver skills to how fast you drive. I’m quite happy driving at 110mph on parts of military road.
Idiots on Motorbikes do 100mph + along the Military Road
We need to speed the island up not slow it down! 20mph is ridiculous it just ruins your car, cars wernt designed to be poodling around at 20mph
99.9% of the island drivers are total nutters that cant drive or on drugs or been drinking just look how many cars end up on there roofs in just one week
That’s a wonderful statistic. Probably best not to post stats you made up in your head!
You moan about everyone on the island so why come here in the first place and talk rubbish
Guess the best you could do then is to go back to the North Island and drive as fast as you like on nice wide roads, leaving those who can drive sensibly over here to drive in safety!
Yeah, we don’t have enough deaths on our roads… just 3-4x more than average, lol. Clearly drivers are showing they’re responsible with their big machines.
Statistics are just a way of hiding the facts, no amount of speed restrictions will alter peoples driving, besides the obvious of enforceability you will find every tin pot parish council asking for speed cameras as long as they can retain the fines. These councils will never consider improving road layouts because they cost money but it is very easy to hit a target (motor vehicles) because the majority of drivers have no alternatives.
That’s why he’s suggesting infrastructure measures rather than speed limits. Former cannot be ignored.
Be quicker to walk !!!!!!
30mph is fine through there !!!!
20mph will grind to a halt … .
Driver’s should drive according to road and traffic conditions …
Godshill is an exception mainly in holiday season as there are fewer pavements, and more pedestrians……
I don’t agree with speeding , but I don’t want to crawl ……
Would pay to see you walking at 20 mph. The Olympics walking events will be a doddle for you!
20 is plenty on this small island.
Common known as a TW’- –
.twenty is plenty ????…
All drivers need to drive accordingly to conditions regardless of speed limits it’s called common sense and common courtesy …..
Not the high street, however, I would welcome 20mph on New Road
I can understand the locals point of view and as far as side roads are concerned, no problem. However, Ryde to Newport traffic is really bad now, a 20mph limit would be a disaster, the queues through Wootton are bad enough now. Ideally the main Ryde to Newport road really needs to be turned into a dual carriageway, but alas this is never likely to ever happen.
“queues through Wootton are bad enough now”..
Yeah, &when it’s queueing, it always going less than 20, so it wouldn’t make any difference to the queues…
Bloody brilliant idea .. probably not enforceable by the police, as there aren’t any, , but as long as it was accompanied by some decent ‘speed humps’, (you know.. the ones that are ok @ 20, but will break suspension @40.) Then it would be self enforcing….
Going by the way you island drivers drive over there i didn’t think you had speed limits your all nutters just look how many crashes there are in one week. Is there a driving test on that island that you have to take before you can go on the road. but then most are drunk or on drugs.
A silly idea, The rate of flow usually through wootton is usually less than that anyway,
Everyone seems to drive at 40mph on open roads as if they fear speed, it would be more productive to introduce minimum speed limits.
What a great statement backed up with no data whatsoever! Get back in your box!
Perfect for the old codgers that only drive at 20 everywhere… 🙂
And you will be one of them unless we are really lucky
Good idea as long as they pass a law that states cyclists also have to observe speed limits and are liable to the same fines etc.
No point in a 20 mph speed limit when the nutter lycras will shoot past you doing 30 or more (probably on the inside) while glibly pointing out they can’t get prosecuted for speeding..
Never going to happen, they would have to enforce speedometers on bikes and ensure calibration for every device.
Whole island should have a limit of 20 to combat all of the drug-crazed numpties flying about.
Because there are SO SO many of them. Oh no, that’s right, most people are not “drug-crazed” drivers.
Read my comment again and see that you have added “most”, so you are a lying idiot. Read IE regularly and you will see that there are plenty of drug drivers on the island. The proportion is also far higher than that in the rest of the country. The island clearly has a big drug problem – take a look on Streetcheck to find out where your local drug nuisances are located.
Infrastructure > speed limits
90deg corners, brick surface, narrowing down the street, making it a slalom etc. are all infrastructure solutions that slow down cars, unlike speed limits which can be just avoided.
Layman’s overview:
https://youtu.be/bglWCuCMSWc?si=htNrGaV8sTEeaMu9
Oh please shut up Susan or what ever your name is today, if you hate cars so much go live somewhere else!
That wasn’t me, lol, but happy to listen to any arguments from an adult?
> if you hate cars so much go live somewhere else!
And yet when immigrants come who “hate X in their country so they decided to leave” suddenly UK public is all about “you should stay and fix issue X in your country”
Can’t win with the omega mind of British public ;)))
Trouble with those is they cause cars to stop and start more which generates more pollution
At the reason they’re not in place now, COST !
How many people have been killed in Wootton in, say, the past ten years specifically by speeding motorists? Most pedestrian deaths and injuries are caused by idiots stepping in front of vehicles without looking, so why should perfectly decent drivers be inconvenienced by them? Do you want to see an increase in deaths caused by the massive increase there will be in pollution if the speed limit is lowered? This is just policy dreamed up by driver haters and it is just another attempt to get people to give up private vehicles, something I will never do.
> Imperial College London’s research into the impact of 20mph speed limits suggests they have no net negative impact on exhaust emissions. Results indicated clear benefits to driving style and associated particulate emissions. The research found that vehicles moved more smoothly, with fewer accelerations and decelerations, than in 30mph zones, reducing particulate emissions from tyre and brake wear. We have undertaken an Environmental Evaluation and are satisfied that the lowering of speeds will not have an adverse impact on the environment or air quality.

I’m really not interested in what a bunch of college climate activists want to publish. Speak to any engineer or mechanic and they can show you that engines pump out far more CO2 the slower a vehicle travels. Not to mention the fact that at slower speeds journey times increase meaning that those engines will be running for longer so pumping out even more CO2. Facts, not ideas.
Do you actually drive?
I’m going to assume not, because at 20mph (or 15-20mph to make sure you’re within the law), to drive safely you’ll need to be in 2nd or 3rd gear. In those gears, as opposed to 4th for instance, the engine is turning over more quickly and when an engine turns over faster it uses more fuel. That’s why it’s actually more economic, and reduces emissions, if you drive slightly faster.
Having said that there ARE some places where 20mph is probably the right limit for the road and the pedestrians around the road. I would include Brading High Street and Godshill amongst those, simply because of the narrow roads and pedestrians having to walk close to the traffic. I don’t believe that’s the case in Wooton.
Of course I’m happy to read any research showing that 20mph zones caused massive death increase from air pollution.
Netherlands should be quite a cemetary so it should be easy to find.
Let me know!
just ignore the stupid limit that is being decided by old codgers
Omg! Bandwagon or what
You just Wait….see them all try copying this one.crazy. if you can’t cope with 30 through Wooton…move! Yes people ALL OVER island speed too much but if you actually take care crossing a road whats issue
Have you ever tried driving thru Wootton at more than 20mph? Maybe you can at 3am….
Most days through there it’s all traveling at less than 20 anyway due to it being a bottleneck.
No. This rot should not be allowed to metastasise out of dictator Drakeford’s Wales. It works in Brading because of the very narrow and winding high street and narrow width of the pavements but everywhere else it would be ludicrous.
There is no reason to introduce a 20mph on the high street traffic tends to crawl through and every time a ferry unloads and at peak times it is often at a standstill. Park road also is ok as it is.
20mph on the residential side roads of Wootton makes perfect sense but it will not be enforced so won’t slow down the idiots.
the car park opposite the doctors surgery is free for the first hour so there should no parking outside the surgery at all apart from the two disabled bays and be enforced.
Mary Rose Avenue should be access only with the section between Downsview Gardens down to the corner of the surgery being made one way (east bound). that would stop the road being used as a cut through and make driving down it safer.
I came across this on the mainland where a parish council introduced a 20mph speed limit. They wasted public money on speed signs and road markings only to be told by the Police that these limits had no legal standing and would not be enforced by the Police, in fact those signs themselves were illegal. Wootton needs to educate itself in the law before proceeding else they too could be braking the law.
Not needed as there are 2 pedestrian crossings and Tesco as everyone seems to drive in there so you have slow down anyway it’s a stupid idea putting a 20 limit there
Wootton high street needs to stay as it is as does park road. All the residential estates should be lowered to 20. Whilst they are at they might want to make arretton 40 apart from the section where the school is.
Next they will be asking for ULEZ charges to be made on vehicles using these side roads because of the extra polution caused by vehicles travelling in bottom or second gear rater than 3rd gear.
Soon it will be rolled out islandwide like it is in London and Wales.
At least it will stop the idiotic boy racers in their ST’s
The WEF will deal with these idiots.
The eventual plan is to get all vehicles off the Road.
The Government will start by getting Councils to reduce speed limits
for motorists and motorists will be hit with so many fines,
in the end they will give up their vehicles.
This kind of lunacy in Wales is currently the subject of a petition to the Senedd to reverse it. At around 450000 signatures, it is, by far the most signed online petition to the Senedd to date. That’s more people than voted for Welsh Labour. Make no mistake, 20mph limits are very unpopular and unjustifiable other than in exceptional circumstances, such as part of Godshill , part of Brading and, probably outside schools, but only at the times children are going in or out.
