A new short film has been released which explores the time Charles Dickens spent on the Isle of Wight and the significant influence it had on his work, including how some local residents may have inspired some of his most memorable characters.
As previously reported by Island Echo, it is thought that Bonchurch woman Margaret Dick may have been the real-life inspiration behind Miss Havisham from Great Expectations.
The new film delves further into some of the compelling evidence uncovered by Alan Cartwright, who owns Haviland Cottage in Bonchurch, and other local historians.
There have been other theories over the years as to who the real-life Miss Havisham was including candidates from London, Shropshire, Dublin and even Sydney in Australia! However, as the film makes clear, the case for Margaret Dick is exceedingly strong.
It also touches on another famous character – Mr Dick from David Copperfield – part of which Dickens wrote during his stay in Bonchurch.
The film comes ahead of the 175th anniversary of Dickens’ stay in 1849 and there are lots of events planned to commemorate the occasion. Ian Dickens – the great, great grandson of the famous author and Island resident who also features in the film – has told Island Echo of some of the exciting plans for 2024.
It is understood that there will be an exhibition at Dimbola as well as visits to the Island from the Dickens Pickwick Club and delegates from The Dickens Fellowship.
As previously reported by Island Echo, Ian has also recently announced a short story competition for primary school children on the Island and is currently visiting some of the Island’s primary schools.
1 teacher at a school he recently visited said:
“We have 60 fired up writers, many of whom come from challenging backgrounds, who are incredibly inspired.”
Additionally, Sue Lowday – who also features in the film – is running a walk entitled ‘The Dickens Trail Around Bonchurch’ as part of the Autumn Isle of Wight Walking Festival. At the time of writing, there are 3 spaces remaining on Saturday 7th October and 7 spaces remaining on Tuesday 10th October.
It is understood that they will be run again in the Spring and you can also book private tours with Sue through her website.
In the meantime, you can watch the fascinating short film below:
