Island midwife Kirsty Arnold has been named the 3rd best birth worker in the world – according to Birth Becomes You website.
Kirsty – who only qualified in September 2022 after 3 years of studying at Bournemouth University – was nominated for the award by Island mum Charlotte Pugmire from Ryde, following the birth of her daughter Darcie.
Charlotte praised Kirsty’s passion and commitment during her labour, but simply saying thanks wasn’t enough, so Charlotte nominated her for the award.
Speaking exclusively to Island Echo at the time, Charlotte said:
“I met Kirsty when we came in for my elective C-section and she was instantly welcoming and warming.
“It was quite daunting coming in and she put my mind at ease straight away and it felt like we had known her forever.
“She was the brilliant from the beginning right up until discharge.”
Following her nomination, Kirsty told Island Echo:
“It’s just completely overwhelming, I didn’t expect it at all I come to work to a job that I absolutely love, and to be able to make a difference to families is what I’m here for.
“To go from being a couple to being a family, is one of the best moments of anybody’s life and to be part of that is absolutely amazing.”
After voting closed on 10th July it was announced that Kirsty had finished 3rd behind an American midwife and the eventual winner from The Netherlands.

Well done to Kirsty.
Does not say a lot for the other midwives on the Island if a newbie is much better than them.
Clearly always got ‘most improved’ in sports as a kid and hold a grudge – stupid comment!!
It just shows what the others must be doing.
The truth says a lot.
Keep dreaming.
Born at St Mary’s says it all.
Not the world – best among the nominees to the “Birth Becomes You website”. Fundamentally different concepts quite clearly.
