A poignant gathering was held in Church Litten on Valentine’s Day to remember ‘The Little Sweep’, Valentine Gray. Valentine died aged 9 at the hands of his master, Benjamin Davies, in 1822. Newport & Carisbrooke Community Council have recently added wording to the Valentine Gray monument in Church Litten to show he is still remembered by the residents of Newport & Carisbrooke. Councillor Julie Jones-Evans said:
“To see this new inscription 200 years on from Valentine’s death is very moving, his life isn’t forgotten. “The monument was raised by penny subscriptions by the people of Newport – think Georgian crowd funding – NCCC is funded by our local residents, so it’s apt that we could do this commemorative addition. “2022 was our Year of The Child and it was a great success working alongside the Youth Trust and local historians. Thank you to everyone who contributed.”
The facts of Valentine Gray’s tragic story have been recounted in the following Island Echo article.

Err … do they not realise that it is now 2024? Typical of the slow Isle of Wight council.
It’s about time the monument had a clean.
Is that really Ms Lowthion in the picture? Unlike her not to have something to say!
Empty vessels and all that.
She’s a politician, that is literally her job, to have something to say.
The reason I won’t be voting Green.
The job of a politician is to represent the views of those who elected them. We seem to have forgotten that after all these years of Tory dictatorship.
Let’s hope that the brainwashing Woke of our children at schools changes to portray just how hard life was for the indigenous people in this country for Centuries.
For now all the young minds get rammed into their thinking is ‘how badly the Africans were treated by us’, and never a mention of the way OUR people were treated, with children being forced to work in terrible conditions.
The elite of this land should burden the shame of what ‘their’ families have done, NOT try to push the blame onto working class people whose ancestors suffered too as this poor lad did
Transitive verb “burden”?
Correct – burden can be used as a transitive verb.
Any excuse to get themselves in the news. Pair of attention seekers
So anyone who is in the news is an attention seeker?? What twisted logic you have.
If we carry on with the Tories, they’ll have kids doing this again..
