Island residents are being encouraged to recycle glass the right way at the kerbside.
Glass is a valuable resource that can be recycled again and again and recycling glass conserves energy, preserves the environment and reduces the need for raw materials.
By rinsing out glass items before placing them in the recycling bin, Island residents can help prevent contaminating other recyclable items. This means the glass can be recycled effectively.
Natasha Dix, the Council’s strategic manager for the environment and waste, said:
“Domestic waste glass is easy to recycle. The UK currently recycles around 71% of container glass, like bottles and jars.
“The glass sector is working towards a 90% collection rate by 2023. Join us in getting clear on glass recycling and let’s all play our part in creating a sustainable future.”
Pyrex and glass baking trays do not go in your green wheeled bins/reusable sack. These types of glass are designed to withstand higher temperatures than glass bottles and jars and can be taken to Afton Marsh or Lynnbottom Recycling Centre to be properly processed.
1 significant aspect of glass recycling is the prevention of smashed glass contamination.
Broken glass poses a risk to recycling facility workers and can contaminate other recyclables. To prevent this, place smashed glass in paper or wrap it securely before disposing of it in your household waste black bin or reusable sack.

All my rubbish just goes in the black bin, any that won’t fit gets burnt, don’t have time for all these silly requests! Lower my council tax and I may consider it, but no chance of that!
If you package glass how do the sorters know it’s glass in the package?
One bin that’s all need get them to sort it back at the yard Or better still dump it down the road
I’m going home now to take my dog for an early nap
A stupid remark from boo one, who would have thought it?
What happens when the bin gets tipped into the truck…. the glass gets smashed.
Nottinghamshire has a separate bin for glass that is collected with on the same day as recycling.
It has never made sense to me that it should all go in the same bin to then be “sorted” later.
Apart from the council saving money for their Christmas bonus.
The Binmen need training in recycling themselves.
I always know when they have been, the dopey B’stards leave a trail
of rubbish behind them.
Is that why we are paying over £2,000.00 a year council tax
to clear up after them.
Or take it to Tesco’s where they have glass only bins
A very good point has already been made. I often witness our recycling bin get lifted into the trash truck. Some of the glass in my recycling bin smashes as it drops into the vehicle.
This is yet another example of an idiot at County Hall dreaming up a not very well thought out plan to enlighten us about a problem that is in fact caused by the collection methods.
I’d sack the total idiot who came up with this ‘news release’. Why hasn’t someone at County Hall thought of this?
Why are we paying extortionate amounts of Council Tax, when it is repeatedly wasted and mismanaged by a not-fit-for purpose administration?
Have a look at Glass recycling in the uk, its all sorted at the plant being crushed by vehicle that puts it in the hoppers, I am all for recycling however i Will not wash containers out, we pay for the container that the product is in, paid with money that we have been taxed on, bottle drinks have vat on them, then they want us to wash them out using the water that we pay for and again taxed on, putting them in the recycling which again we are taxed on, so it all goes in recycling as one and nothing gets washed out simple
Totally agree!!
why should we wash it. All they need is a big wash bath at the recycle centre
