Northwood St Johns – the only Isle of Wight team to have played on Saturday – have reached the quarter finals of the Hampshire Trophy after beating Kingswood United on penalties.
The game – played on a 4G pitch – finished 1-1 in normal time. Ollie Cousins was the scorer for Northwood with a glancing header from a long throw from Joe Tigwell in the 25th minute.
The Island side had a 2nd goal ruled out for offside on the hour mark. This was a curious decision from the linesman, as it was an own goal.
Southampton Premier League Kingswood then scored an equalizer with 9 minutes left to full time.
In the penalty shootout, goalkeeper and captain Andy Payne stopped Kingswood United’s 8th penalty, for Bertie Watson to bag the winning penalty.

(Northwood St Johns won 8-7 on penalties)
Northwood St Johns: Andy Payne Charlie Butt, Bertie Watson, Joe Tigwell, James Flux, Luke Flux, Lewis Blackmore, Jordan Whittle, Callum Bowen-Clarke, Ollie Cousins, Vinny Morgan Subs: Leo Jones, Dan Woodford.
After the game, Northwood St Johns’ captain and goalkeeper Andy Payne said:
“The bad weather in the morning made us get the 12:40 Red Jet. This didn’t give us a lot of time to warm up.
“We started the game strongly and went 1-0 up at half time. Knightwood Utd play some nice football triangles, but we worked hard as a team defending. We had a goal disallowed for offside, but it didn’t look offside.
“We defended well. I made a good couple of saves to keep it 1-1. Then, it went straight to penalties.
“I saved the 7th penalty, and Bertie Watson scored our 8th penalty to win 8-7.”
Northwood St Johns winning manager John Cook commented:
“It was a good competitive game, but we were certainly the better side and deserved to go through.”
