Angelica and Jill – donkeys adopted by Isle of Wight Indie band Wet Leg – sadly departed for pastures new on Saturday (25th March).
Both donkeys had been closely monitored for a while and both had various health issues that were causing concern. On Saturday, the donkey sanctuary reluctantly concluded it was their time to go.
22-year-old Angelica is also the name of one of the recordings of Wet Leg. She was said to be 1 of the smallest donkeys at the site but 1 of the biggest characters.
Angelica enjoyed taking part in activities and regularly attended community events, where donkeys are taken to different locations within the local community. She loved being centre of attention and adored meeting people.

The sanctuary have said:
“Angelica’s pretty name could fool people – she was angelic and also had a mischievous side.
“Affectionately known by staff as Jellybean, our little Angelica passed peacefully on Saturday evening, surrounded by our vet, our dedicated team, and her mini herd friends – Bella, Wizzy and Geraldine.
“She received the very best of care and will be greatly missed.”

Jill – who was in her late 30s – had been part of the OAP herd for many years and enjoyed meeting visitors over the time she lived at the sanctuary. In her later years, Jill was unable to eat as well as the younger donkeys due to dental and other internal issues. She had been adopted by Wet Leg as a Mother’s Day gift.
The Isle of Wight Donkey Sanctuary have said:
“Despite age-related stiffness, Jill would often enjoy trotting around the field with the other OAP’s, as if she was a youngster again.
“Jill was a joy to be around and will be deeply missed.”

Wet Leg are the donkey sanctuary’s celebrity ambassadors. The band have taken a cuddly toy donkey with them on tour, including an appearance on stage at Glastonbury.
1 further donkey – Archie baby – has also been adopted by the band after hearing how his urinary problems were causing him to have a wet leg.

How nice to see a rising star not just paying lip service to a charity but actually fully cuddling the Donkey. Obviously a truly caring person.
Was it a suicide pact do you think?
The isle of wights very own Dignitas? Lol.
Or maybe it’s Donkeytas.
Warren, a typo, “Wet Leg’s Hester Chambers at the Isle of Wight Sonkey Sanctuary.”
Sorted.
What a charming girl, so kind.
Why does it seem like you have a lot of Donkey Deaths Recently?
They are all rescued so not surprising.
Do access websites for “S.P.A.N.A” and “The Brooke” Also. the caring “Donkey Sanctuary” as a start to learn what humans do to these gentle working animals. I have also read that ignorant children hurt them dreadfully. Rescued donkeys (many from what seems like a life of hell) are given r’nr, love, kindness rehabilitation, medical help and good food. Many ex-working donkeys spend their retirement in a sanctuary. They are rarely baby donkeys when rescued, but old and broken.
So sad but lovely to hear their remaining years were taken care of by the Donkey Sanctuary.
