Martin Woodward MBE, founder of the Island’s Shipwreck Centre & Maritime Museum, has released a fascinating new book detailing the stories of modern shipwrecks and marine accidents that have occurred in the busy waters surrounding the Isle of Wight.
The book – entitled ‘Maritime Mishaps: Modern Shipwrecks, Sinkings & Salvage Around the Isle of Wight’ – explores both serious incidents involving larger vessels as well as the multitude of smaller craft that have come to grief in the area.
Woodward was personally involved in many of the local recoveries from the late 1960s to the present day and so is well-placed to relate these tales. Woodward has worked in the commercial diving industry since 1968 and is also a former coxswain of the Bembridge RNLI lifeboat, which he has also written a book about.
Some of the stories in this tome are tragic but many are light-hearted with an element of humour. The book contains 280 photos and is available at local outlets such as The Shipwreck Centre and Arreton Barns.

Brilliant Book well worth the money, buy one quick before they sell out.
I’m hoping there’s a chapter on the great 21st century Island maritime mishap…..Floating Bridge Number 6, or will that be a separate book, or maybe even a movie.
You could definitely get a few sequels out of it. Lol
