Do you have an unwanted adult bike sitting in your garage? If so why not take it to a bike drop-off on Sunday 2nd April…
The event is to be held at Gift to Nature, Shide Meadows Centre PO30 1HR (behind National tyres) between 10:00-12:30.
Bicycles donated to Re-Cycle: Bikes to Africa are shipped to the continent where using a bicycle can make education, work and health care more accessible.
Sue Bailey, who coordinates the collection of unwanted bikes on the Isle of Wight, has said:
“It doesn’t matter if it is a little rusty or has flat tyres – as long as it is not totally seized up, we can use it. However, unfortunately, the charity cannot take dual suspension bikes nor children’s bikes.”
Suitable bikes are taken to Re-Cycle’s national headquarters in Colchester before being shipped to 1 of 4 countries in Africa, either The Gambia, Ghana, Zambia or South Africa.
Bartletts donate the use of a Luton Van, and Wightlink provides a complimentary ferry crossing.
Sue continued:
“For some months we have been looking for somewhere to store donated bikes on the Island. We are delighted that Gift to Nature have been able to give us the use of a garage and we can begin collecting unwanted bikes again.”

There are dozens put aside at Lynnbottom. There’s a start
Plenty of those ‘ Green ‘ ones laid about looking for a new home.
After the most appalling way that many of these people treat our own when they arrive here, I would rather my cycle was donated to Cliffton Grade scrap yard.
These people have abused kindness and we fund so many here now taking our homes, filling our jails, maternity wards and adoption centres to capacity, that I think the UK has given too much and now they see us as a soft weak touch.
So nothing from me, as I fund them here unwillingly now.
what a dreadful person you must be
And what a naive, blinkered fool YOU must be.
SEE the FACT that wherever on the entire planet such settle en-masse that the most vile crimes, overcrowding and poverty and misery soon follow.
it is NOT coincidence.
Give NOTHING as they will take anyway.
Oh, are there still people left living in Africa? Thought they had become fed up waiting and come directly to the source of aid nowadays.
why can’t they do them up and donate to those in the UK – or isn’t that do gooding enough
isle of wighter.
It would be but ONLY if a foreigner living here were to receive them, then only really if black would the ‘do gooder’ feel vindicated in their efforts. Presumably hoping that if we keep being nice, they will become likewise.
Not working yet, so lets give ever more, seems to be the ethos.
Think the British tried that stunt with Dangeld, that failed too.
Does it really matter where they live!?
What a brilliant idea. These people live with unimaginal poverty in these counrties but always smile and get on with it.
Anything that can improve thier day to day lives is worthwhile and donating an unwanted bike is a direct way you can help.
What a ridiculous idea.
There will be a pile of discarded cycles at the closest beach and an armada of dingies heading to Europe, destination the UK.
The jackbooted keyboard army are out in force commenting on this story. Remember that you only live on a safe island in the lap of luxury because of an accident of birth.
Safe. Nowhere is safe. lap of luxury please not on here.
The comments section really is Isle of Wight mentality on a plate.
