A temporary speed bump blamed for causing a female motorcyclist to be thrown from her bike outside Newport Police Station on Thursday has been removed.
As previously reported by Island Echo, the incident occurred yesterday afternoon and the rider – a woman in her 60s – was taken to St Mary’s Hospital having sustained a minor injury.
Speaking to Island Echo about her accident, the rider states she has since been told by a Police officer that the temporary speed bump had been removed because of yesterday’s incident.
Recalling the accident, she’s said:
“It was the speedbump. As soon as I hit it, I flew off.”
It is not clear who installed the speed bump although multiple utility companies were undertaking work on the High Street at the time.
It is also unclear why a ‘bump’ was installed, rather than a flat temporary surface.

It looks like a bright yellow topped item to protect cabling whilst works were carried out and not a speed bump?
Sheer stupidity. No warning signs either. If a group is formed I’d be interested in joining!
Sue those responsible for this.
A speed hump is in place for a reason.
Probably you put that there cowboy builder
Bet that reply was thought long and hard about.
ride over it at the correct speed and it’s fine, bright yellow so you see it easily.
These type of speed bumps are awful for motorbikes and push bikes. Have always been and will always has. Has nothing to do with the victim, stop blaming the victim.
No you don’t. Read my response from the other day. It was not signed and was a hefty bump. There should have been warning signs displayed.
If there were 2 lines of cars, there is little chance anyone on a motor bike or otherwise would see it until it was too late. Significantly, it is a flat plate today.
These are the sorts of removable plastic bumps you find on the entrances to car parks, not in the middle of a public highway and certainly not right on top of a pedestrian crossing. Your eyes need to be on the lights and the crossing and the vehicle in front. Not on a hidden obstruction like this was.
I drove over this yesterday morning it was about 6” high in the middle even going over it slowly it made the suspension bottom out as you came off it it was dangerous
It was a huge yellow bump. You’d have to be stupid or blind not to see it.
