Wight Tri athletes enjoyed a successful weekend of competition across the country, with Team GB qualification, personal bests and impressive performances in challenging conditions highlighting the club’s strength in depth.
At the Upton Duathlon in Worcester, Paul Martin secured Team GB age-group qualification after finishing 17th overall in a time of 2:26:31.
Competing on a demanding gravel course in hot conditions, Martin recorded 1 of the fastest bike splits of the day and finished 6th in his age category to book his place representing Great Britain.
Meanwhile, in Bristol, club members Paul Edwards, Aesha Ouiles and Dan Squirrell took on a triathlon that proved anything but straightforward.
Mechanical problems, including snapped chains and tyre issues, combined with a shortened run course due to an unexpected rave, made for an eventful day.
Ouiles completed her first Standard distance triathlon in 3:03:04, while Squirrell crossed the finish line in 2:24:46 on his Standard distance debut. Although Edwards’ race ended early because of mechanical issues, he remained on hand to support his fellow competitors.
At the Dorney Lake Sprint age-group qualifiers, Helen Scholes and Jade Davies battled soaring temperatures and non-wetsuit swim conditions in highly competitive fields.

Scholes produced a personal best time of 1:18:52 to finish 5th in her age group, narrowly missing out on automatic qualification for the World Championships.
Davies also celebrated a personal best, completing the course in 1:13:25.
Across 3 events, Wight Tri’s athletes delivered a weekend of determination, strong performances and personal achievements, continuing the Isle of Wight club’s successful season.
