Yarmouth Town Council’s Neighbourhood Plan Working Party held its first meeting back in March. 10 members of the community listened to a presentation by James Brewer, Isle of Wight Council’s Planning Policy Manager, about what functions a Neighbourhood Plan can provide for the area and how it interacts with national and Island policies. There was a very positive initial discussion under James’ guidance, to better understand what Neighbourhood Plans should cover, as well as what they cannot provide governance for. The discussion established useful common ground for objectives among the group. This will help create policies for development within the town and parish boundary, for up to the next 15 years. The group will gather evidence about the needs and wants of different sectors of the community in the coming months. This will include residents young and old, businesses and people from community organisations from within and beyond the Yarmouth and Thorley neighbourhood area. The Working Party welcomes contributions from everyone within the community and would like to encourage all groups who would like their voices heard to contact the Town Clerk to understand how to take part in this once-in-a-generation forum, to ensure Yarmouth continues to develop as a vibrant and sustainable community.

How many 2nd home owners participated ?
As it says, the aim is that “Yarmouth continues to develop as a vibrant and sustainable community”
Second home owners are part of the community that enable this sustainability with their support of the shops, pubs, restaurants and tradesmen. The majority of homes in Yarmouth have never been at the price level of first time buyers and have always sold at a premium simply because of the area.
Personally I would rather see well kept second homes than run down HMO’s.
No, I am not a second home owner, neither can I afford to live there, I’m just being realistic….
Very true, but most Islanders are clueless and jealous of 2nd homeowners.
If 50% of the population could afford a second home, then 100% of homes would be owned by…..?
Where would the other 50% live then?
Or….if no-one had second homes and people wanted to holiday here, where might they stay? In whose hotels, guesthouses? Owned by?
For brief periods of holiday. Like tourists. Whereas if those homes were full time residential, THEN you could argue they support the economy.
Don’t let anyone with a plot of land that could be built on in the future anywhere near your neighbourhood plan.
