Rickie LambertFormer Saints and England footballer Rickie Lambert has announced his intention to play for Southampton Legends against Isle of Wight Legends at Westwood Park on 18th May. Liverpudlian Lambert rivals Southampton legend Matt Le Tissier for his goalscoring ability and penalty record. Released by Liverpool as a youngster, Rickie began his career at Blackpool and went on to play for Macclesfield Town, Stockport County, Rochdale, and Bristol Rovers before joining Southampton for over £1 million in 2009. Lambert became a key signing for Southampton and was their top scorer as they were promoted to the Championship from League 1 in 2011 and to the Premier League the following season Altogether, he scored 106 goals for the Saints in 207 appearances. After leaving Southampton, Rickie spent a season at Liverpool, before joining West Bromwich Albion and Cardiff City. He retired in October 2017. During his footballing career, he won 2 league Golden Boots. On 8 August 2013, Lambert was called up to the England team, scoring on his England debut at Wembley against Scotland with his first touch. He went on to play 11 games for the national side. Newport IW FC have moved the game from Friday 17th May to Saturday 18th May due to a possible clash with Southampton competing in the Championship playoffs. Any ticket already purchased will be valid for the new date. Newport IW FC have said:
“Due to the distinct possibility Saints will be involved in the Championship play offs on Friday May 17th, the Island legends v Saints legends game will now take place on Saturday May 18th with a 1pm ko to avoid a clash. “All tickets already purchased are valid for the new date, and you will receive an email confirming the change shortly from the ticket provider. “We hope as many of you will still be able to attend and enjoy what promises to be a great day, and wish Saints all the very best in their attempt to return to the Premier League.”
