A 17-year-old boy remains under Police investigation after 8 people were injured in a serious car crash in Havenstreet last month. As first reported by Island Echo, a Vauxhall Corsa and a Skoda Rapid partially left the road on the top bend by the Little Cow Shed on the evening of 13th March. Emergency services rushed to the village of Havenstreet where a man in his 70s, from Ryde, suffered potentially life-threatening injuries. A woman in her 60s, also from Ryde, sustained serious injuries. 6 other people sustained minor injuries in the smash.
The driver of the Vauxhall, a 17-year-old boy from Newport, was arrested on suspicion of drug driving and causing serious injury by careless driving. He was bailed to return to Newport Police Station on Tuesday (2nd April), where he was released under investigation whilst enquiries continue. Island Echo understands that analysis of blood is now taking place to establish if the driver was under the influence of drugs.

Clearly it’s was dangerous driving and drug driving what else is there to investigate? He ended up on the wrong side of the road because he was taking the corner too fast.
That’s only ‘careless’ driving. Still carries a lengthy prison sentence though. Hopefully that’s what the driver will get. Plenty of time to think about what life is like in HMP….and reflect on the result of his stupidity.
Highly unlikely will probably be 3 points and a £80 fine
Check the sentencing guidelines… minimum 12 month ban ( assuming he hadn’t been banned in the last 3 years in which case minimum 2 year ban. 1 year inside at magistrates court, 2 years inside at crown court.
Nobody on the Island ends up in jail you can even carry i knife in public and avoid jail.
At that age anything of 6 points or above results in the the driving licence being revoked which means a complete re test, then the insurance will also be a lot higher resulting in a potentially dangerous uninsured and unlicensed driver willbe on the loose.
Not no more in this country jail?? no chance..but he get get a small fine and points..
Probably some bs defence like someone pulling put of the cow shed without looking and forcing then onto the wrong side of the road.
Until there are strict speeding rules on this lawless Island things will never change.
I cannot believe that the Council are allowing a speeding event to take place in
Sandown very shortly
THAT IS JUST ENCOURAGING ALL THE NUMPTY’S WHO DRIVE ST’S TO SPEED!
What a stupid comment to come out with. Does everyone who goes to a boxing match immediately go out and fight? Try using your brain instead of spouting rubbish.
Some morons do
Well said Paul there really are some proper freaks on this page
Are you somehow under the impression that road accidents don’t happen anywhere else in the UK, that they only happen here on the Island?
The speeding rules are the same here as for anywhere else in the UK, and the police about as adept at catching drunk/drugged up motorists here as they are anywhere else.
But, I’m guessing you don’t get off the Island much, do you, to experience life elsewhere?
Speeding rules are much different elsewhere
Try driving over 20mph in Wales or London
You will receive a fine through your letter box
The island is to tame with speeding Numpty’s.
It is time IW Council took a leaf out of Wales and London’s books
rollout Camera’s islandwide and make the Island a safer place for
everyone.
Mr Moss you need to get a life, this will be a controlled event which brings a lot of pleasure to people who enjoy motor sport, this will be third event and as far as I am aware there has been no problems during of after this very well run event.
This is the Isle of Wight, they couldn’t control a toilet flusher between them.
Have you seen the state of the traffic going into McDonald’s, Ryde
Traffic control does not exist on the island, just like most other things.
The island is run by Numpties
Key is the recovery process of the two poor pensioners who were seriously injured by this young idiot. Police maybe waiting on the outcome before defining the charge. Minimum careless driving.
I haven’t lived on the island for that long, but what has struck me is how many souped up cars there are being driven around, with roaring or back-firing exhausts, presumably driven by youngsters. Why does there seem to be a disproportionate number to the size of the place. Came over from a big town where you get the odd few here and there, but in Sandown they are everywhere.
