The first donkey born at the Isle of Wight Donkey Sanctuary in Wroxall has died.
Winston passed away peacefully on Wednesday 22nd February.
Throughout his life, Winston was involved in lots of the community work that the donkeys do; visiting care homes, attending events and bringing smiles to those who saw him.
Winston had been receiving veterinary treatment for a number of months and had recently undergone extensive diagnostic tests at Liphook Equine Hospital.
Though there was no conclusive diagnosis, Winston’s blood tests were not good and he was rapidly losing weight. Once home from Liphook, Winston received around-the-clock care at the sanctuary and had regular visits from vets from the Island.
Sadly, despite the best efforts of our wonderful team of staff and volunteers, together with the support of both veterinary teams – Winston’s condition was deteriorating, and he was beginning to suffer. The tricky decision was then made to help Winston pass peacefully surrounded by those who cared for him.
A spokesperson from the Isle of Wight Donkey Sanctuary has said:
“We will miss him greatly and he will be remembered with great fondness. All of our donkeys end their days here at the sanctuary and we ensure all our animals receive the highest standard of care.
“Rest In Peace Winston.”

So how old was he?
I can’t see it in the write up
RIP winston he was a lovely donkey XX
Very sad, saw Winston at the Chale show last summer and he seemed quite happy and healthy then. Always hard when a loved animal’s health declines. Condolences to the sanctuary.
