A group of Cub Scouts on the Isle of Wight are being given help to achieve their badges by talking a lot about rubbish.
Cubs from the 1st East Cowes Scout Group have received a waste and recycling education workshop. The workshops are part of a wider education scheme as part of Isle of Wight Council’s waste contract, delivered by Amey in partnership with Newport based The Footprint Trust.
The Cub Scouts learnt about the history of recycling and how modern materials are recycled as part of their work towards achieving World and Environmental Conservation badges.
Isle of Wight Council Executive member, Councillor Paul Fuller, said:
“For the council recycling is both a social and environmental issue and it is great that the 1st East Cowes Scout Group have been learning all about the important message of the three R’s – Reduce, Reuse and Recycle.
“I wish the cubs the best of luck in achieving their environmental conservation activity badge and I hope that they will take the three R’s message out into the community, school and at home.”
Sam Brown from 1st East Cowes Scout Group, said:
“I knew Amey and the Footprint Trust visit schools to provide the waste education workshops and approached them to see if they would be interested in helping our Cubs achieve their badges.
“I was delighted when they said they were more than happy and the Cubs really enjoyed the evening. The event will go a long way to helping the youngsters achieve their badges.”
Paul Southall from Amey added:
“Learning is not just restricted to the classroom in schools. When we were approached by the 1st East Cowes Scouts Group we were more than happy to help members achieve their badges, and we are happy to help any local organisation or group improve their knowledge of how to recycle more and waste less.”
Ray Harrington-Vail from the Footprint Trust said:
“The Cub Scouts were really enthusiastic and took a real interest in the journey of waste. It was a great evening and we’ve already been asked by another group if we can present an education workshop to also help them achieve their badges.”
Waste education workshops have already been delivered to a number of schools on the Isle of Wight, with further workshops planned in 2017. Any school or local organisation interested in hosting one should contact The Footprint Trust via [email protected].
