Cowes Library celebrated 75 years as a library on National Libraries Day (Saturday 6th February). It had originally been a Primitive Methodist Chapel (from 1889) before opening on 13th January 1941 as Cowes County Seely Library.
To celebrate the day, two local authors visited to sign copies of their books – Lucinda Blanchard with her book ‘SWAYING’ and Mary Grand with ‘Free to be Tegan’.
During the day, Cowes Heritage Group members were available to meet visitors and gather information for their next annual exhibition, all things relating to the former Plessey’s site at Cowes.
Cakes, including a birthday cake, were available courtesy of the Supporters of Cowes Library Group – and children were entertained by Huxley’s Magic Show.
Library supervisor, Joyce Blizzard, said:
“It was a really good day. We put up a Cowes Library time-scape display showing certain events with pictures and newspaper articles over the years. We are very proud of our library and hope it will remain an important part of the community.”
