Calbourne Water Mill is to close its doors for the final time later this month, it has been confirmed. It was only a week ago – Good Friday – that the attraction opened for the 2024 season following a closure over the winter but it has been announced on social media that they will close for the final time in just over a week’s time (14th April). The Mill, which was first mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1086, has been in constant operation since the wheel was cast in 1881. In recent times however, issues have arisen which have needed significant investment to fix, most notably a pit wheel breakage in December 2023. Repairs – but not the complete repair – were undertaken in time for the mill to appear on the recently released 2nd series of Jewel of the South. Current owners, the Chauncer family, acquired the site back in 2000, but they have been looking to sell since 2018. It was back in September 2023, that Island Echo reported that the site was up for sale with offers north of £1.75million sought ahead of a public auction. In attempts to save the establishment, those running the mill held 2 fundraisers in 2023 with only a little over £2,000 raised. All of the items on site are marked with lot numbers ahead of an auction in May. The wheel at the water mill is to be repaired, the owners have confirmed. Calbourne Water Mill is to remain open until 14th April 2024.

To be honest it has been rubbish for years
Such a shame. It was on our “To do” list in August after finding it closed in February.
Such a shame. I remember meeting Mr Weekes the old millwright back in the 1970’s. Always such a great place to visit.
Be no attractions to see on the island soon apart from pot holes , road works and road closures.
If you like charity shops or nail bars or constant drinking ,plenty of those
Disagree! It was a beautiful place for a walk, picnic, feeding ducks or cream tea. Lovely old mill and a piece of history. So sad!
Yup, when the ferry companies make it more expensive to come here than it costs to fly almost anywhere else in the world this kinda thing happens. Tories and their greed is allowing the island rot.
Oh do shut up fred. Just wait until labour are in, you will really have something to moan about then.
Nothing to do with the ferries. Owners have run it to the ground. Could’ve sold it several times but kept asking for more money. It’s their own fault, in my opinion.
So, now the Tories are responsible for Calbourne water Mill closing?
You really are your own worst enemy with your comments, and it honestly does nothing to persuade people to vote Labour, you know, when supporters like you spout this constant nonsense.
You really do epitomise what used to be called the ‘looney left’ with these comments.
