2 new confirmed cases of coronavirus have been identified on the Isle of Wight, according to the latest Public Health England figures.
The news comes just hours after it was announced that 2 people have died on the Isle of Wight having tested positive for COVID-19. The victims are said to be a man in his 70s and a man in his 80s. Both had underlying health conditions.
Nationally, the number of people who have tested positive for the deadly virus has reached in excess of 17,000. There have been 1,019 deaths and just 135 recoveries.
Patients are being treated both in an isolation ward at St Mary’s Hospital and at home.

Symptoms of coronavirus
The symptoms of coronavirus are:
- a high temperature
- a cough
- shortness of breath
The symptoms are similar to other illnesses that are much more common, such as cold and flu. Research shows it takes, on average, around 5 days for symptoms to start showing.
If you are worried that you might have coronavirus
- Stay indoors and avoid close contact with other people, especially older or vulnerable people
- Call NHS 111 or use the online service https://111.nhs.uk/covid-19 – you will be asked questions and given advice
- You should not go to a GP surgery, pharmacy or St Mary’s Hospital without checking with NHS 111
How to avoid catching or spreading coronavirus
Do
- wash your hands with soap and water often – do this for at least 20 seconds
- always wash your hands when you get home or into work
- use hand sanitiser gel if soap and water are not available
- cover your mouth and nose with a tissue or your sleeve (not your hands) when you cough or sneeze
- put used tissues in the bin straight away and wash your hands afterwards
- try to avoid close contact with people who are unwell
Don’t
- do not touch your eyes, nose or mouth if your hands are not clean

bit over the top for people queuing for food, however, perhaps the UK should start doing what the south African police are doing to enforce social distancing….
Police fired rubber bullets at shoppers outside supermarket, eye-witnesses say
Shoppers did not observe recommended safe distance between them
Police arrived in 10 patrol vehicles, started firing rubber bullets towards them
Later police used whips to get the shoppers to observe social distancing rules
as reported in national news today.
Different culture and I cannot see it happening at Tesco. You have to live and understand the difference in other parts of the World
@Bill – a fair point and one that I agree with, however, things can change so quickly if we are not careful.
What a thoroughly stupid comment for anyone to come out with, people need to be more educated and really understand the seriousness of the situation. There are a small number of people who still struggle with the concept of the 2 meter rule, of that there is no doubt. However anyone when asked to observe the same needs to be reported to the police should they offer resistance, Not beaten into submission.
It is down to individual people to observe the rules, in short FOLLOW SIMPLE INSTRUCTIONS, the sooner done the BETTER FOR ONE AND ALL.
it is not a stupid comment kev – this is actually happening in the poorer suburbs of Johannesburg now – this is reality for south africans. In India, police were hitting people with batons because they weren’t doing as they were told.
These people are petrified of the authorities and will not listen to the police, because they do not trust them at all.
They have good reason not to trust them – people disappear all the time.
Think yourself lucky in this country that we do not have authoritarian governments that sanction military and police brutality on citizens like this.
People in this country are so wrapped up in their little bubble, that they forget, it is only a short distance to places where treatment like this is normal.
It is worth remembering that a significant portion of those people in the poorer suburbs in johannesburg have very little or no education and all they really have is social interaction – which they are being denied – HIV is rife and the country cannot afford a lengthy lockdown – they will achieve their objective through violence if needed to shorten the whole process, before the entire country collapses – it cannot borrow like the UK, Europe or the US, as investors know, that they will struggle to see the money back.
south africa has initiated a 21 day lockdown – they daren’t do it any longer initially, as they are risking out and out chaos.
Quite right none given your comment is not stupid, it is far worse than that…..
You state ” perhaps the UK should start doing what the South African police are doing to enforce social distancing “.
You consider that OUR police force use Rubber bullets and beat individuals! That is a sure way to cause social uprising and turn the police into hate figures.
Do not compare the British legal system to that of others. Believe me you are very fortunate to live in a Country that even allows you to share your opinions in such an open manner.
The thumbs down shows what others think of you opinions.
kev – if the self entitled people in this country that have been strutting around preaching about their human rights over these last few years, get a baton across the legs for not adhering to the staying indoors rulings to ensure that the spread of this virus is kept to the shortest timeframe possible, then so be it.
some people in this country are so used to the police and authorities not acting like this, that they feel that they can be pricks and act with impunity.
Bit like kids that never get a slap from parents or teachers – carry on being feral dickheads until someone gives them a real good kicking – which gets their attention.
and yes. south africa police have not only been using rubber bullets, they have moved onto tear gas since my first post.
If that is true in SA, then I can only say that these are draconian measures typical for the government out there!
As usual none given firm believer of the news being true..muppet!!!!
@Bill payer – I am guessing you have never been to south africa, or never seen how they deal with things there?
for instance…..
Thirty-four people were killed near the Marikana mine in August 2012, after workers went on strike, demanding a living wage from Lonmin in a complex dispute that escalated into violence.
The former bishop of Pretoria Johannes Seoka, who was on the phone to one of the victims when the police opened fire, said the company should take more responsibility.
in 2017. the company were still dragging their feet over dealing with the fallout to this.
Personally I think tissues should be flushed down the toilet.
No! Tissues are different to toilet paper and WILL block the drains.
Condolences to the 2 families. Please Islanders start taking this seriously. We are not immune, and with an ageing population, once it kicks off here we will have proportionately more fatalities. STAY AT HOME
Heartfelt sympathies to the families of the gentlemen that have sadly died of this dreadful virus.
I agree stay at home … sadly not everyone is listening … two separate groups of 7 and 8 cyclists this morning passing through a west Wight village … judging by their ages not related…. the usual weekend cycling group I expect. Why????
“Nationally, the number of people who have tested positive for the deadly virus has reached in excess of 17,000. There have been 1,019 deaths and just 135 recoveries.”
Sorry I don’t understand your figures
That’s approximately 17%. 10 reported cases on the Island, 2 deaths. 25%. Do the MATH
20% sorry I was working on the 8 reported cases
From that 17.000 infected persons 135 have recovered and 1019 have died.
16.68% Death rate
Ive just realised im not good at MATH
no, that’s right
The recovery figure of just 135 seems to be very low?
The recovery stats will move up quickly over time. It is low in the UK at the moment because there is a long period between virus confirmation and official recorded recovery. In China (largely Hubai) (where new cases peaked in the first week of February) there have been to-date reported:
81,394 confirmed cases, 3,295 deaths and 74,971 recovered.
People still recovering
This is so sad,,
R.i.p
Condolences to the 2 familys,
Please everyone stay safe and stay indoors!!
This is serious!!!
These numbers are inaccurate. I know someone who has it. After ringing 111 they were told he would not be tested as his symptoms, although very unpleasant, were not serious. They only want to know if it’s affecting your breathing.
The queuing would make sense if the shelves were filled. Queuing for over half an hour for one item only to find empty shelves when you’re finally allowed in isn’t helping.
Honestly listen to you all, why don’t you all shut the f up and spend your time helping others in need!
Oh no you couldn’t possibly do that could you!!
west wighter – perhaps you should take your own advice, instead of being a keyboard preacher.
Really!!!!!
Take a look at yourself
Look whos talking ure boring and everyone is fed up with your comments…again muppet.!!!!
boring bill payer – go back to sleep
Well said, i was just abot to write the same thing.
Yeah, ranting at the people on the internet is pointless,…………oh
I think if we knew where the cases were located it would hit home harder to the ones risking themselves and others during these trying times …
No – there is a Law called: the G.D.P.R.
Lin,.. I can tell you where they are,… ALL of the confirmed cases are in hospital! (if you’ve not got it bad enough to need to go to hospital, they won’t test you)
Where is the “what’s happening to the island?” and “the island is the safest place to live” brigade at?
this is a very serious condition, please folks if you have to go out please observe the social distancing requirements.
i would love to go and help/volunteer but my health conditions prevent me from doing that, so a HUGE THANK YOU too every one of you are able to volunteer at this time.
finally
my sincere condolences to the families who have just lost their family member.
RIPThinking of the families and friends of the two men. People MUST stay at home. I live on the Mainland and it is a very frightening situation and still some people aren’t listening Stay safe, stay well AND STAY AT HOME❤️❤️
Two people died because of the stupid mindless, being selfish and not saying inside well done to whoever infected those 2 elderly people I hope you’re happy
More important than all preventative actions advised so far is to ware gloves at all times no exemptions until you return home then wash all items purchased were possible milk containers tins bottles beer cans etc the virus lasts longer on impervious items. WARE GLOVES
WEAR!
Gary, wearing gloves does little good, but may give you a false sense of security.
Much better to take the advice already given for weeks now, WASH YOUR HANDS!
D’you not think that if the medical & scientific professionals (people who really do know a lot better than you) considered that wearing gloves was a good strategy, then they would advise people to do that,… they haven’t !
113.000 people have recovered from the virus.
