A car fire has led to the closure of the main road through Binstead this morning (Friday).
Hampshire & Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service has 1 appliance from Ryde on scene at Quarr Hill, where a Mercedes-Benz estate car has burst into flames.
Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus have successfully extinguished the blaze, but significant damage has been caused to the engine bay of the vehicle.
The Isle of Wight Ambulance Service is on scene but the occupant of the vehicle is understood to have escaped injury.
The road has been closed from Eleanor’s Grove at Fishbourne to Binstead Hill roundabout.
Southern Vectis has at least 6 buses stuck outside the closure, with 2 coaches also at a standstill. This is likely to cause delays for children getting to school.
UPDATE @ 08:35 – Quarr Hill has now re-opened in both directions.
Nearby backroads including Firestone Copse Road are heavy with traffic – including lorries – that diverted earlier on.
Motorists are advised to continue avoiding the area for the time being, diverting via The Downs to circumnavigate any delays.
The fire service are preparing to stand down from the incident just half an hour after being mobilised.

Hope all OK, car’s can be replaced, …. although inconvenient as long as the occupants are safe .
But I still say everyone should carry a fire extinguisher, they are £15 in Halfords, maybe cheaper on Internet ! …
Tacking a car engine fire is extremely dangerous. Cars and property can, as you say, be replaced.
Far better to get out of the car and call the 999. There are very few occasions where tacking it yourself is the better option. ( someone trapped in the vehicle, for example )

You will be amazed how fast a car fire spreads, get away from the car asap, you will not be wanting to inhale any of the fumes coming off from the engine, they are very toxic.
Keeping a closer eye on your car and maintaining your car properly would be a good start, however, most people take it for granted their car will just keep going without problems….if you can’t afford to maintain your car, don’t have one…..
I’m not surprised. The I.O.W always has something like this going on. I was there on the scene and I just stood there with a straight face. Obviously I hope the driver is okay and everyone around it.

No I wouldn’t at that situation as I know someone could’ve died or been seriously injured.
I hope I get credit for the pic with it on fire as it has been used without my knowledge!!
But everyone was ok driver wasn’t in the car when we got there on the bus we beat the fire brigade there
