The All Weather Lifeboat from Yarmouth was launched at 11:26 this morning (Wednesday) to respond to a pan-pan alert 1.5 nautical miles South West of Beaulieu River.
The Severn-class lifeboat, the ‘Eric and Susan Hiscock (Wanderer)’, left Yarmouth Harbour with good speed and was on scene within just 15 minutes. 2 of the lifeboat’s crew were then transferred onto the casualty boat to assess the situation further.
It was soon discovered that the boat’s hydraulic system was found to have been defective and as a result had lost most of its oil, rendering it inoperable.
With the help from the owner, the emergency steering was rigged with 1 of the lifeboat crew on the throttle and the other on the tiller.
The lifeboat then escorted the stricken motor vessel back to Yarmouth where the Yarmouth Harbour staff were ready on scene and helped the boat to safely manoeuvre alongside 1 of their pontoons.
This was Yarmouth Lifeboat’s 4th shout of the year so far, compared to Bembridge Lifeboat’s 21.
