Wightlink has taken the decision to close its takeaway cafés, as well as banning customers from eating and drinking their own food.
The cross-Solent operator has announced that customers will not be allowed to bring their own refreshments to eat or drink onboard ferries or at ports from Saturday 16th January 2021. The company’s own refreshment outlets will also close from Saturday.
All customers are being told they must wear a face covering throughout their crossing (unless medically exempt) to help stop the spread of coronavirus.
Keith Greenfield, Chief Executive of Wightlink, says:
“Although the vast majority of essential travellers onboard our ferries are obeying the law over mask-wearing, not everyone is following the regulations.
“We want to remind customers that they need to wear a face covering, at all times and in all areas, to protect themselves and others during the pandemic.”

Should be doing what they did in the 1st lockdown. People stay in their vehicle SIMPLE!
Whoever cleans these ferries should be sacked. Next time you go on the ferry take a look at the underside of the tables they are absolutely filthy especially on the older vessels…All they care about is making money, couldn’t give a toss about the health and welfare of the passengers.
Should have been done from the start. Horses and stable doors come to mind
It would be far more sensible to allow car driver/passengers to remain in their cars for the journey. Catching Covid is far more likely than the ferry sinking.
You are able to stay in your car, but you have to give them 48 hours notice, I messaged them , but apparently they need that long to arrange it.
Strictly speaking they are not takeaway cafes; people stay in the same enclosed space to consume their purchases so how is that different to a cafe? Should have been closed when all other cafes closed.
