The cross-Atlantic rowing team ‘Wight Lightning’ have given local charity Ability Dogs 4 Young People a cheque for a massive £6,000.
Mark, Roger, Dan and Will recently succeeded in their row across the Atlantic, from La Gomera in the Canaries to Antigua – a staggering distance of approximately 3,000 miles.
They battled the elements and braved enormous waves. They coped with fatigue and each other in the cramped conditions aboard the boat. When they arrived in Antigua, they finished the race in 11th place out of around 30 boats that started.
In the lead up to the big row and throughout the journey itself, Wight Lightning were raising money for 2 charities – Ability Dogs 4 Young People and Ellen Macarthur Cancer Trust. Thanks to their efforts and the kind donations of the public, Ability Dogs 4 Young People has received £6,000. With money raised on Virgin Money Giving and other donations, Wight Lightning have raised well over £8,000 for the Sandown-based charity.
Carol Court, founder of Ability Dogs 4 Young People said:
“It is amazing what Mark, Roger, Dan and Will achieved and we are so grateful to them for choosing us as one of their charities. I can only imagine what they went through on this epic journey.
“It is thanks to their support and generosity and others like them that we are able to continue to help disabled young people and children living on the Island.”
