Fresh efforts are underway to protect Big Mead Pond in Shanklin from another summer of dangerously low water levels, with a public fundraising appeal launched to help pay for emergency water deliveries before conditions become critical.
The appeal comes after Big Mead has faced several years of challenges. In 2022, concerns were raised that the pond was at risk of disappearing altogether after the collapse of a pipe supplying fresh water from the downs left the site increasingly reliant on rainfall. Since then, periods of prolonged dry weather have repeatedly threatened the important wildlife habitat.
Last summer, Big Mead Pond reached critically low levels following weeks of hot, dry weather, prompting fears for fish, ducks and other wildlife. A community-led fundraising effort, supported by the Isle of Wight Council, saw 120,000 litres of water delivered to the pond, helping restore water levels and avert a major environmental disaster.
Now, organisers say higher temperatures have already been recorded this year than at the same point in 2025, and they are keen to act before the situation deteriorates.
Water levels at Big Mead have already fallen by around 1 foot, prompting calls for early intervention to protect the site throughout the summer months.
Permission has been secured from the Isle of Wight Council to bring water tankers onto the site if required, with a supplier ready to assist. Each tanker can deliver 30,000 litres of water at a cost of £260.
It is hoped that taking action now will avoid the serious problems experienced last year.
The project has been fully endorsed by Ward Councillor David Llewellyn, who has pledged his support.
However, there is currently no budget available to cover the transportation costs, meaning organisers must raise £260 for each tanker required.
Anyone able to make a donation or support fundraising efforts is asked to contact the organisers on 07762 084742. To donate, click here.
Every contribution, no matter how small, will help protect Big Mead and the wildlife that depends on it.
