2 crashes in Newport this afternoon have set about chaos for motorists as the heart of the Island is now gridlocked following a second crash on Staplers Road.
A blue Ford Ranger and a second unknown vehicle have been involved in a collision near the junction of Blacklands Lane and Staplers Road in Newport this afternoon (Monday), leaving traffic entering the town completely gridlocked.
Island Echo understands that the accident, which took place at the top of Blacklands Lane, has blocked vehicles from entering and exiting the lane as well as blocked travel along Staplers Road in both directions off the roundabout.
A total of 2 units from the Isle of Wight Ambulance service are in attendance, as well as 3 officers from Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary.
At present, no serious injuries are believed to have been sustained.
The accident comes as the route is being used as a diversion following an earlier 2-car collision along Fairlee Road as previously reported by Island Echo.
Fairlee Road remains closed as we head into the evening, with Island Roads issuing an immediate closure notice in order to maintain network safety.
Motorists looking to get into Newport from the East of the Island have been left in a difficult position, with diversions sending traffic through Blackwater Road and Burnt House Lane.
UPDATE @ 17:40 – Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service have confirmed that crews from Newport were called to a 2-vehicle RTC on Staplers Road this afternoon at 16:30 where a number of casualties were treated by paramedics.
It has been said that the Newport-based appliance left the scene at around 17:00.
Meanwhile Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary have confirmed that a number of officers currently remain on scene.

The first accident should have been cleared hours ago on fairlee it causes severe heavy traffic on roads that cannot cope and now we have a second crash , if there was no major injuries then the first crash has no reason to jusy still have the cars sitting there . This wouldn’t happen on the mainland , it’s boiling out there and after travel disrupted weekend this is the last thing we all need . Get the cars recovered !
