Isle of Wight West MP Richard Quigley has thanked Sir Keir Starmer for his “gigantic effort and sacrifices” following the Prime Minister’s resignation.
In a statement issued today, Mr Quigley said it was “saddening” that Sir Keir had decided to step down, adding that the country had been “desperate for change” when Labour won power in 2024.
The Island’s Labour MP said Sir Keir had overseen the return of the Isle of Wight’s first Labour MP and thanked him for the role he had played over the last 2 years.
Mr Quigley said:
“It is saddening that Keir Starmer has decided to resign, we know that the country was desperate for change in 2024 and he was the leader of the Labour party that returned its first ever MP on the Isle of Wight – I thank him for the gargantuan effort and sacrifices he has made along the way.
“His resignation was dignified and outlined the achievements we have made over the last two years, many of which have been lost in the media noise along the way. I know people are eager for change, but I fear treating running the country like running a football club will not end well.
“However, despite all this political drama, my focus remains on the Isle of Wight. There is a clear process set out for a new PM to takeover and whoever that is will get my full support, but I will not be signing any nominations papers. The PM may change, but my priorities for the Island do not and I will continue to fight to ensure that the Island gets the recognition it deserves.”
Mr Quigley said his priority would remain representing the Isle of Wight and ensuring the Island continues to receive the recognition it deserves.

Really? Starmer has done ****all for the Isle of Wight so far as I can see. Good ridence!
