East Cowes Vics play Cowes Sports in ‘El Clasicowes’ at Beatrice Avenue this evening (Tuesday).
This is the first time the 2 sides from opposite banks of the Medina have faced each other in a competitive fixture for 6 years – the last time being a Gold Cup semi-final at St George’s Park back in 2018.
East Cowes Vics have the highest points-per-game average in Wessex Division 1 (2.5): Cowes Sports have a point-per-game average of just 0.29 in the Wessex Premier.
However, Vics manager Alex Smith refuses to see his side as favourites, saying:
“I’m not a bookmaker, so who the favourites are is none of my business. Cowes are in a sticky patch of league form but have also had a couple of convincing wins in away cup matches. They’ve got plenty of high quality players, and I’m sure it’ll be a great game.”

When asked whether he was feeling optimistic, Alex replied:
“We’re always optimistic and excited for every game we play. We all enjoy opportunities to be challenged, tested and stretched against good opposition and trying to collectively find solutions as a group.”
On Saturday, Vics play Division 1 leaders Frimley Green at Beatrice Avenue. When asked whether the Hampshire Senior Cup game against Cowes was a distraction for Vics’ push for promotion, Alex told Island Echo:
“The most important thing for us is continuing to face a wide range of challenges and problems, and finding solutions to them so we can grow as a team. Regardless of cup or league, it’s imperative we play well and maintain momentum moving forwards.”
For Cowes Sports, manager Max Draper said:
“A tough game ahead, as it always is with a local Derby. Alex and the team over there are on a good run and have made some good experienced signings which will no doubt help.
“However, we look forward to the game and will look to get the result we have been searching for, as well as the performance.”

The last time the 2 teams clashed, Cowes won 4-3 thanks to a Jimmy Wykes brace and further goals from John McKie and Conor White. 7 members of the Yachtsmen’s winning team in 2018 still represent the club in 2024: Callum Chase, Jez Conway, Connor Furmidge, Ed Hatt, John McKie, Fin Phillips and Jimmy Wykes.
East Cowes Vics only have 1 member of their 2018 team playing for them today: Jacob Reynolds. The Vics scorers from 6 years ago were Jordan Browne, Giancarlo Giancovich and George Woodburn.
Which of the 2 Cowes teams will come out on top tonight? Kick off for the Hampshire Senior Cup tie is at 19:45.
However, spectators are encouraged to come to Beatrice Avenue early as a big crowd is anticipated.
