Up to 4,000 Islanders have already been vaccinated against COVID-19 with hopes that a further 6,000 will be vaccinated in the next week.
As the roll out of the Oxford/AstraZeneca vaccine begins, it is hoped that 10,000 of the Island’s most vulnerable residents and workers will have received their jab by the end of next week.
Currently, around 2.9% of the Island’s 140,000 population have been given either the Pfizer or Oxford vaccine, but it is hoped that number will increase to somewhere around 7% by the end of next week.
In 2011, there were just over 23,000 people living on the Isle of Wight over the age of 70. It is hoped that all of these people, plus carers and frontline health staff, as well as the clinically vulnerable, will be vaccinated by mid-February. If we round the number up to 25,000 to take into consideration care staff, it means that approximately 21,000 people still need to be vaccinated over the next 5-6 weeks – around 3,500 a week.
4 vaccination centres are already up and running with Riverside Centre in Newport set to begin operations with the capacity to vaccinate 500 people a day by the end of January. That means that at full capacity the Riverside centre alone could vaccinate 3,500 people a week based on a 7-day-a-week vaccination programme, giving hope that with 4 other centres the goal can be realistically achieved. That is subject to the supply of vaccine being available without delay.
The Government is aiming to have all over 70s, healthcare workers and the most clinically vulnerable vaccinated against the coronavirus by mid-February, paving the way for restrictions to start being eased. However, legally the lockdown could continue until the end of March, during which time millions more people could be vaccinated.
31.8% of the Island’s population were aged 60 years or over in 2011, compared with 22.5% in England and Wales. That means the Island has a higher than average elderly population and is therefore the population is at greater risk from COVID-19.

It would be useful to establish and publish how people are being told to about appointments for vaccination. There are lots of rumours of letters and or phone calls but no real information.
JHVF
My husband had a phone call from our medical centre to tell him of appointment and has had his jab this morning
Does anyone no what ingredients are in this rubbish. no thanks would rather let my immune system fight it of like it does with seasonal colds and flu every year
The answer would obviously be yes you covidiot.
Yeah….. good luck with that Bob. Lets hope your immune system can do a better job than a vaccine.
I’m sure it could. These companies themselves don’t trust their own vaccine. They have immunity against any side effects or long term health problems arising from taking it. Hell this vaccine will probably cause more deaths than Covid.
the conspiracy theories are alive and well i see
There is no conspiracy when it is the truth. Do some research into these companies.
Absolute clown.
A little bit of poetry here. Oh Bob, you kxxb.
Good, one less to vaccinate, I move u the queue 🙂
