Smoke seen issuing from underground electrics has prompted a call out for the Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service this morning (Thursday).
1 fire appliance from Ryde is in attendance at the top of Union Street after being alerted to the developing situation sometime around 07:00.
A cordon has been established around the immediate area in the interests of safety.
Engineers from Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks have arrived on the scene and are working to establish the best course of action.
The issue has resulted in the loss of power to 7 postcode areas including PO33 2AA, 2AD, 2DT, 2LE, 2LH, 2LI and 2PH.
UPDATE @ 09:18 – It has been confirmed that a fire in the main junction box has melting a number of electricity cables.
The cables need to be replaced and as a result power is expected to remain off until at least lunchtime.
A number of local businesses are unable to open due to the lack of power. Lloyds Bank’s security systems mean they are unable to open the doors.

No, numbskull, I do not work for SSE. I just appreciate the hard work and dedication that their staff provide. I did work in the ESI a few years ago. I was not an arse licker. In fact, I was a shop steward for the ETU. I adapted, you were probably one of the ‘clear out of dead wood” after privatisation.
Hmm, dumbo. Just to put you straight. I do not work for SSE. I just appreciate the hard work and dedication that the SSE staff provide. I did work in the ESI. In fact, I was a shop steward for the ETU. I happened to adapt. You were probably part of the clear out of ‘dead wood’ following privatisation. Reply please.!!
