An Isle of Wight hotel, overlooking the sea, which had been ‘deteriorating for years’ will be knocked down to make way for houses. The Isle of Wight Council has granted permission for the Sandown Manor Hotel, on Yaverland Road, to be demolished and 4 houses built in its place. In information submitted to the council, owners Carlo and Sarah Valvona said they struggle to keep the hotel afloat following COVID-19 and have significant repair costs, estimated to be topping £600,000. The planning authority has recognised a lack of profit means the business cannot support investment in the hotel building and is not currently providing a “high-quality tourism offer nor likely to do so in the future given its poor condition.” Officers have said in their decision report, there would be minimal negative impact on the Island’s tourism economy, but there is a modest positive benefit of providing housing.
Proposals have the support of Sandown North’s Councillor Debbie Andre who said the hotel forms a visible part of the skyline at the Yaverland end of Sandown Bay. She said the building had deteriorated over the years and did not enhance the area or add anything of heritage value. Five residents supported the plans saying the hotel was currently not attractive, in need of replacement and it is an unviable business. The approval has been granted subject to 14 conditions and includes work having to start within three years; parking spaces need to be in place before the houses can be lived in and construction of three houses cannot begin until the vehicle access has been widened. The authority had previously refused plans to build six houses on the site in 2021.

Why refuse Melville Hill but approve this one? Inconsistent decisions.
Melville Hall is in a prime location for holiday makers where as this is disconnected from the amenities.
They look affordable NOT. Brown envelopes galore on this one then.
Why would “brown envelopes” be needed? The development falls way under the legal requirement to provide affordable and/or social housing? A sensible, albeit inconsistent, decision from the Planning Dept. For once.
You mean second homes!
who the hell would afford these?
certainly not islanders, incompetent planning department at its best!
Why incompetent?? A derelict building, which sits as a blot on the landscape, will be removed and replaced with something that will be aesthetically pleasing, although not to all, and serve a functional purpose.
And yes these will affordable to some islanders, and if not then I would still rather have as second homes than what sits there now.
Affordable homes for someone but not you obviously. Why would they build some crappy little cheap houses when they can maximise profits by building nice expensive houses? You certainly lack a business brain.
The planning department is not in place to find affordable homes for any who believe it is their god given right for such a property, they just deal with planning law.
Better that than what’s there now Sandown badly needs some new buildings instead of the eyesores that are on the esplanade
They’ll be a million quid each then…..
Million quid!! I wouldn’t pay half that to live overlooking all the crackheads running around thieving and torching things! Place is a dump
Better the millionaires than the low life on benefits even though I would be envious. If the low life on benefits had it, it would still look rundown because they believe someone else should tidy up after them as they are entitled.
Why? Thought Sandown needed hotels?, it’s who you know and back handers. Don’t build unaffordable £750,000/£1,000,000 homes – build a new Hotel, it’s a prime location – new for old should be planning. Not sure how repairs would cost £600,000. ?
No doubt the council want the new houses to be sold as holiday home so they can charge double council tax.
