A paedophile from Ryde who blamed his offending on a period of struggle following his mother’s death has been handed a suspended prison sentence for making indecent images of children.
58-year-old Jonathan Troy, of Victoria Road in Shanklin, admitted 3 charges of making indecent images of a child when he appeared at the Isle of Wight Magistrates Court back in May, as previosuly reported by Island Echo.
Appearing for sentencing earlier this week (Tuesday), court heard how on 25th February 2024, Police arrested Troy, seizing a number of electronic devices including; a tower, Dell laptop, phone and 2x USB sticks.
A forensic examination of the devices found a total of of 9x category A images, 13x category B images and 121x category C images in his possession.
Category A images depict illicit material of the most serious nature. All of the 143 images discovered were still images, the court heard.
Defending himself, Troy said that the offending occurred during a period of struggle following the death of his mother. He also said that upon discovering a file of images, “curiosity gets the better of you”.
Magistrates, who spent some time deliberating their sentence, handed Troy a 10-month prison sentence suspended for 18-months. A total of 20 rehabilitation activity days were attached to the suspended sentence order.
Troy was handed a 5-year Sexual Harm Prevention Order and a 10-year notification requirment under the Sexual Offences Act 2003.
