An oil painting depicting The Needles on the Isle of Wight is one of only 100 works chosen for display at an upcoming art exhibition at Mall Galleries, London, from 13th to 18th March.
The exhibition, showcasing paintings by professional artist Francis Salvesen, is themed ‘The Joys of Being British’ and explores national pride, wildlife, countryside and identity.
Francis, a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts. has said:
“There’s so much about Britain to feel joyous about,” says Francis, a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts.
“I thought it about time we celebrate them!”
Along with the Isle of Wight scene, other works on display will include paintings of an NHS nurse, British traditions, such as playing conkers and cheese-rolling, native wildlife, and a portrait of the Princess of Wales.
Francis explains why he chose to include the painting of The Needles in the exhibition:
“The Needles is one of the most photographed groups of rocks in the world. This view of three distinctive chalk stacks features in all the classic views of the island, and is a truly unforgettable image. The Needles creates not just a stunning view, but is also an important landmark, which has played a major role in the Round the Island Yacht Race. With this combination of beauty and importance, it would seem absurd not to include The Needles in an exhibition all about the joys of Britain.”
The painting entitled ‘The Needles, Isle of Wight’ is for sale at the price of £650.
The Joys of Being British exhibition takes place in Mall Galleries, London, from 10:00 to 17:00 Monday 13th to Saturday 18th March. Admission is free for all.
