Last week Carers IW and People Matter IW held an event to raise awareness for unpaid carers on how they can stay healthy and connected, building communities which support their role whilst recognising that they are individuals with financial, social, health and wellbeing needs of their own.
Over 70 people attended the Carers Awareness event at Winchester House in Shanklin last Tuesday (12th June) – part of national Carers Week 2018.
Maggie Bennett gave a talk about caring for people with dementia and that was followed by speakers from GD Legal Services who discussed the importance of having a Lasting Power of Attorney and how this protects both carers and the cared for person.
Demonstrations of the Telecare system were given by WightCare and Carers IW’s Manual Handling trainers were also on hand.
Yvonne Millmore from the Isle of Wight Council’s ‘Shared Lives’ scheme explained the exciting new service offering an alternative solution to supported living or residential care, offering both carers and the cared for different options.
The Living Well team were also present to help people understand that even if you were not eligible for Adult Social Care support, that the Isle of Wight Council have recognised this and currently fund this team to assist with finding the right support for you.
