Newport IW FC has asked friends and supporters to raise £3,000 via crowdfunding to help keep the club alive until their new ground is built at the Racecourse in Whippingham.
The club’s supporters have raised £250 of the total required to date (Monday).
Steve Rackett, Chairman of Newport Supporters Trust, who are the majority owners of the club, has said:
“Newport (IoW) FC have the same operating costs as the Island’s two other Wessex League teams, but without a home ground we don’t have the match day bar and catering takings and in addition we are making contributions towards the cost of the groundshare.”
“We have therefore launched the Crowdfunder and income from these donations will allow us to support activities across the club for the rest of the season.”
The club received no income for vacating St Georges Park, which has been owned by developers South Coast Leisure since 2005.
Mr Rackett added:
“In addition, we are looking for some extra commercial sponsorship. Several local businesses have already backed the club this season, and we would like to thank Crocker Street Tyres and MOT, Island Car Centre, Knight Tree Care, Houghton Ltd, Vectis Scaffolding, Odessa Tackle, Capital Jewellers, While U Wait Services, Live Wire, Wight Vehicle Repairs, Love Running, Webb Autohomes, Carisbrooke Fish Bar, The Quirky Tea Pot, WH Brading, MCM Construction, Ascott Bathrooms Plumbing & Tiling, and IOW Glass Limited for their support.”
Anyone wishing to support Newport’s crowdfunding appeal can do so at https://www.crowdfunder.co.uk/p/newport-iw-fc-support-our-club.
Businesses who wish to support the club should contact Mr Rackett via email [email protected].
The Supporters Trust have organised a number of community initiatives this season, including match day foodbank collections for Pyle Street and Pan Together food pantries. The next home game on Saturday 28th October, against Aldermaston, will see the club host Wessex Cancer Trust and help raise awareness for the charity’s activities.
Fans can become members of Newport IW FC Supporters Trust for £10 a year via the club’s website (www.niowfc.com) and have a share in the club’s ownership.

Lets face it it is never going to get built at the race course..
Why don’t they approach the Ryde FC in Oakfield who Island Echo reported recently have folded, and use their ground?
And then change their name to Ryde FC? You aren’t quite getting this are you John?
Oakfield FC are no more but have a ground.
Newport FC are still going but don’t have a ground.
The new ground will only be a few miles from Oakfield.
It is not rocket science to use the disused ground Hamad.
This has probably been asked already, but why was the old ground closed before the new one was built?
It’s a good question to ask of the tinpot developers who are responsible.
Ask your ex chairman who told you to vacate you St Georges, which has been left unused since. Council should not of given planning permission for retail park.
Yes, why did the developers evict them? They could have waited until they were ready to begin construction on both sites.
Maybe we could get a company to build a disabled toilet so wheelchair users can come and support Newport. Or maybe East Cowes Vics could use some of the rent they get and pay for one.
I was a regular at games but without toilet facilities and no wheelchair access to clubhouse it’s now not possible.
Yea, Vics getting all that rent money yet no ground improvements… been there once and the place is a dump. Whose back pocket is that money going to?
Maybe if Newport had their own ground, then they could build a disabled toilet and wheelchair access to the ground.
If they go they go, it’s never gonna be resolved, this situation has dragged on far too long & local football goers are tired & bored of the whole situation. Draw a line under the whole debacle, let Cowes continue to grow, get yourselves to Westwood Park & be done with it!
looking at the comments made i would say that the facilities at East Cowes Vics are far superior than what Newport FC have at present, this being as Newport FC actually do not have anything and looking at it they most probably never will have another ground of there own.
Why aren’t the iow masons providing funding, they are heavily involved in iow football.
What was the matter with their ground next door to ASDA?
Far to many Brown envelopes and greedy Councillor ‘s! “shock horror” not on Picture boxIsland
