The Ventnor & District Local History Society’s latest publication, ‘Ventnor in 99 Old Postcards’, featuring a selection of postcards selected from the Ventnor Heritage Centre’s extensive archive, will be launched later this month.
The pictures include Aerial Views, The Beach, Carnival and Fete, The Cascade, The Children’s Corner/Boating Lake, Churches, Comic and Novelty Cards, The Esplanade, From the Cliffs and Pier, Hotels, Houses, Multiviews, The Park, The Pier, Pubs, The Royal National Hospital, Shops, Sports, St Boniface Down, St Catherine’s Home, The Station, Steephill Castle, Steephill Cove, Streets, Transport, Wheeler’s Bay and The Winter Gardens.
The Society’s chair, Lesley Telford, has said:
“We are excited about this new book, which gives a unique window on Ventnor’s past and shows the value of our historical archive. It will make an ideal Christmas present for anyone with an interest in local history”.
Paul Kingswell, a member of the Vectis Postcard Club and a volunteer at Ventnor Heritage Centre, says:
“Postcards have always had an important role to play as a social history artefact. As a prominent seaside resort in the Golden Age of postcards in the early 20th century, Ventnor was the subject of literally thousands of cards, whether of local events by local photographers or more general views by local and national publishers.
“This selection gives a snapshot of life and times in and around the town from the early 1900s through to the 1970s.”
The book will be on sale from Wednesday 25th October for £6.50 (plus postage) through the Society’s online shop at https://www.ventnorheritage.org.uk/shop/ – or for £6.50 in the Ventnor Heritage Centre, at the Society’s monthly talks on 27th October and 24th November.

Will it include all the junkie s
Whilst they are in abundance in Ventnor (and the drunks), I’m sure this publication will just include the “nicer”, more positive aspects of this (still) lovely island town!
I would love to see a photographic history of the druggies of Ventnor. The weirdo with no shoes who eats from bins can go on the front cover.
