Several fire appliances are in attendance at a woodland fire on St George’s Down this afternoon (Tuesday).
The fire, which was said to have been around 50 x 20 meters started on a high point of the downland above Newport.
2 appliances from Newport as well as a water carrier from Ventnor are on scene where their presence has forced the closure of Burnt House Lane.
A 4×4 Land Rover from Ryde has travelled up the steep 250 metre incline via a footpath to assist firefighters in their efforts.
Crews have surrounded the small blaze, extinguishing the flames. They are now damping down the charred area.
Island Roads have now closed the road in both directions.
The origin of the fire is currently unknown.

Remember, do not discard cigarettes or other smoking materials in the countryside. It is also important to clear away bottles, glasses and any broken glass to avoid them magnifying the sun and starting a fire.
Always take extra care if using a barbecue and only light fires or BBQs in designated areas. Never leave a campfire or BBQ unattended and extinguish them properly after you have finished using them.
