Bob Seely MP has written to Health Secretary, Matt Hancock, requesting the Isle of Wight is treated as a priority area in an attempt to speed up the COVID-19 vaccination process.
With cases rising and an above-average elderly population, it is a race against time to get the most vulnerable vaccinated on the Isle of Wight. Figures show that in 2011 there were over 23,000 people living on the Island over the age of 70.
Mr Seely has this week outlined a number of facts:
- Around 3,500 to 4,000 Islanders have already received their first vaccination. It is hoped that by the end of next week this will rise to nearer 10,000.
- In terms of vaccinations, the Island is running a little ahead of the UK but a little behind Hampshire.
- The first vaccination site opened at Carisbrooke in December. West Wight Sport and Community Centre was the second to open shortly after with the Bay Medical Practice in Shanklin going live just before Christmas – slightly earlier than planned – along with the Westridge Centre in Ryde.
- Each of these sites has so far received one delivery of 975 doses of the Pfizer BioNTech vaccine. The box of the Pfizer BioNTech vaccine contains 195 vials and each vial has 5 doses, but it has been found that doctors and nurses can get six good doses from each vial – so instead of 975 doses per box, we can get 1,150 doses per box.
- In the next few days, the Island is expecting each site to receive a further 975 doses of the Pfizer BioNTech vaccine, 400 doses of the Astra Zeneca vaccine along with a further box of 75 doses of Pfizer BioNTech for care homes.
- After that, the Island is expected to receive only the Oxford vaccine which will make it easier to supply the Island.
- A large vaccination site at the Riverside Centre in Newport should be ready to deliver 500 vaccinations a day by the middle of the month but may not get the vaccine until 25th Januar
Bob has said:
“The Hampshire and Isle of Wight health teams are doing a great job at getting the vaccine to those who need it, but I want the Government to do more to help them. I have asked the Health Secretary to treat the Island as a priority.”
“Because of the five-day shelf life of the Pfizer BioNTech vaccine and batching in 975 doses, only sites that can deliver 975 doses in that time scale are included. That means that smaller pharmacies were not included in the initial roll-out. I am hoping that the more versatile Oxford vaccine will allow pharmacies on the Island to get involved in the next stages of the roll-out.
“We do have an elderly population, so we are more vulnerable than some other areas, and mainland hospitals are already under pressure. As a result, I have asked for additional support for the vaccination roll-out on the Island.”

Has the MRHA and manufacturers approved the squeezing of extra shots per phial? As I understand it, so far pharmacies are not permitted to carry out Covid vaccinations, even though they do thousands of ‘flu jabs every year.
Some joined-up thinking required. Not Seldom’s strong point.
It is due to the storage temperature of this vaccine… The oxford one does not have that problem..
I want only the Oxford type. As that uses tried and tested virus shell to promote the immune system. The American type is dna based, which, to me, is more of a concern.
Unsure what system the others use.
Do those who have ‘caught’ CV and been tested positive NEED to take it? Surely a waste if they are immune now anyway?
I bet those Pirates have had it already and that vile child pedo. Such is the messed up thinking state of this country now.
you wont get a choice what type you get.
Pfizer uses modified RNA, not DNA. It uses genetic code to fool the body into producing antibodies.
Oxford uses a chimpanzee adenovirus to carry genetic material (RNA) which comes from the Covid protein spike, and will allow the body to create antibodies only assuming the person has not had that adenovirus before, which is why a chimp virus was used.
BOTH vaccines use genetic material. Anyone who tells you otherwise is misinformed or lying.
I doubt any pirates or paedophiles have had the vaccine unless they are over 80 or work for the NHS.
id gladly take any right now. iv got the virus and knowing how it effects me and my wife i really dont care what make it is
I feel it is odd that we are getting some of the USA’s vaccine, and the German version when they must need all they can make themselves, and likely others lands are receiving the Oxford vaccine before we are all treated
Surely best to keep ones own vaccines, or is this to safe guard against one having serious as yet unknown side effects by having different vaccines spread in each land?
Don’t get it otherwise
No thank you
Then stay inside for the rest of your life and don’t infect the rest of us
But then you’ve already been vaccinated, right? So how could he infect you then?
the vaccine is not 100% effective. Selfish people who cant be bothered to get a vaccine should not expect help from the NHS.
Will they get their national insurance payments refunded then ?
no of course not you muppet.
if you choose not to have a vaccine, thats your choice.
and no, I havnt already had the vaccine, hardly anyone has.
I am only going to have the Oxford variant & is easier to store.
Sorry you don’t get to choose.
So, 4,000 people have been vaccinated already, they are doing roughly 6,000 vaccinations per week, that means only 3 weeks to have the roughly 23,000 of the people most likely to die vaccinated. Surely we will be able to go back to normal then at the end of this month, though I doubt it.
No, lock down ends when the spread does. Like the flu jab, you can still catch it and spread it. Just that the symptoms will be a lot milder.
The vaccine will help us to quickly bring down the R number to below 1. Then we can start to go back to normal. As I have said to friends, expect normal to return in 2022 at the earliest.
The usual flu season has been massively reduced, the US is reporting a 98% reduction. The new normal will be staying at home if you have a cold or the flu so not to spread to friends and family. And during the winter wearing a mask on public transport. And washing your hands more. This is just common decency and showing respect for your community. Something I am sure you would acknowledge. A shame a few think it’s their human right to spread disease and miss information.
Well it would be nice if people with a cold or flu did stay home until cleared, but they do not.. there are many out there now, walking around with no particular place to go, sneezing, coughing, wiping nose on sleeve, and those that spit it out onto the pavement… Disgusting people that should be staying indoors.. NOPE those people do not care at all.. they say they do not need to wear a mask.. sadly I do not wish them well…
There have been deaths across all age ranges.
Lockdown will carry on until there is herd immunity from vaccination.
There can be deaths across all age ranges for many other illnesses too, is it worth causing the entire population to suffer for the 0.1% or less of the under 70s who could die from it?
How about all the people going undiagnosed with cancer because they either can’t get an appointment or feel a burden for going to the doctor during this time? Or all the families struggling to put food on the table because both parents have lost their jobs?
Are you willing to chance it ??
Are you suffering because you have to stay at home and are only allowed out to exercise and buy food? Really?
Any life saved is worth it.
Everyone who needs it can get a doctors appointment. However it has to be by phone or online. Thats the way it is.
No, I’m not suffering, it just annoys me that many other people are and will be for the sake of a few who may or may not die under the age of 60-70. The amount of food parcels being handed out by food banks has at least doubled, domestic abuse, wait times for important surgeries, suicides, depression, people unemployed are likely to lose their homes. Everything else gets swept under the rug for the few who may die.
So the entire population is suffering in your first comment, but not so much in your second.
You don’t get to decide who lives or dies.
You don’t get to decide what the rules are.
Just a reminder… Many more would be dead had lockdowns not happened.
a child dies every three seconds, globally due to starvation – about 10000 a day – I didn’t notice you worrying about that JD – apparently being locked indoors is worth it, if a life is saved –
guess what JD you are the worst kind of hypocrite – only quoting the saving lives mantra, if it has a greater risk to your own perception of your continued existence and health – if this virus didn’t affect you at all, you would not give two hoots about others suffering.
Stop trolling to try and get a reaction.
You are the worst kind of internet troll, trying to tell others what they think.
Get back under your bridge dickhead. You couldn’t care less about children starving, you just want the pubs open.
See, not nice when someone tells you what you think is it…
infection rates still going up apparently – so the pubs aren’t the source of tranmission and should open up
rubbish.
pubs when open are a massive source of transmission.
Claiming that because one source of transmission has been closed proves it is not a source of transmission is utterly ridiculous.
Saying “THE source of transmission” like theres only one source is utterly ridiculous too.
go troll somewhere else.
go hide indoors JD you snowflake for ever – whilst the rest of us get on with our lives.
why would I want to hide indoors? perhaps to avoid trolls? get back under your bridge idiot.
JD – baaaaaaaa
