The Isle of Wight will feature in an episode of the BBC’s Great Coastal Railway Journeys next Wednesday (14th June) as presenter Michael Portillo rides the Island’s mainline railway.
The episode will see Portillo start in Southampton before travelling by ferry to the Island where he will ride the Island Line made up of recycled London Underground trains.
He will then follow in the footsteps of BBC’s Countryfile and visit the Garlic Farm where he will learn about the daring WWII mission to bring garlic to the Island from Nazi-occupied France.
Finally, Michael goes to the Island’s iconic Needles where a top-secret Cold War operation took place to develop and test British space rockets.
The episode will be broadcast on BBC 2 next Wednesday (14th June) at 18:30 and will be available to watch on iPlayer shortly afterwards.

Lol
Argh, but will it be running ?
Why is he coming to the isle
Of wight when his the title of his a show is great railway journeys when he is on the isle of wight. What point?
always makes me laugh how he can make a living from railways when his government tried to close the settle to Carlisle line.
Except that it was him who prevented its closure whilst in government!
He thinks of it as his finest achievement.
Likely the best PM the Tories never had.
Seems truly interested in the UK and it’s people.
Considering he retired from the Commons in 2005, that’s a severe indictment of the current rabble.
Cameron was weak and lacklustre, as was May. Everyone who followed are the worst combination of self-serving nastiness and sheer incompetence. Not one of them are capable of successfully running a tepid bath, let alone the country.
Has anybody noticed that it says the mainline? Theres only one line so how can it be the “mainline”?
“Theres only one line” ….. Havenstreet?
