Firefighters are working to contain and extinguish a field fire that has broken out on the outskirts of Ryde this afternoon (Saturday) – with mainland crews already on their way to the Isle of Wight.
A number of appliances from across the Island are on scene and responding to Ashey, near The Downs.
Tinderbox dry conditions have led to a field catching alight – thought to be as a result of the steam train passing by.
Hampshire & Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service has already mobilised 2 fire appliances to the Island, with the mainland crews on the ferry heading to East Cowes.
UPDATE @ 14:50 – Firefighters have rapidly extinguished the lineside fire, located close to Ashey Station on the Isle of Wight Steam Railway heritage line.
2 appliances from Ryde and Southsea remain in attendance, with all other resources stood down.
The Steam Railway has said that if conditions dictate, steam services will be replaced with diesel locomotives to ensure safe operations.
If you see a fire in the countryside, contact the fire service immediately on 999. Do not attempt to tackle fires that cannot be put out with a bucket of water.
Remember, do not discard cigarettes or other smoking materials in the countryside. It is also important to clear away bottles, glasses and any broken glass to avoid them magnifying the sun and starting a fire.
Always take extra care if using a barbecue and only light fires or BBQs in designated areas. Never leave a campfire or BBQ unattended and extinguish them properly after you have finished using them.
