The Memorial Cup semi final between Whitecroft & Barton Sports and High Park was abandoned in the 54th minute following a leg break to High Park forward Billy Haylor.
The score before the abandonment was 1-1, with a Scott Parker header giving the 2nd Division champions a shock 18th minute lead.
Parker then conceded a penalty by bringing down a W&B attacker in the penalty area 5 minutes from the half time break, with the resulting spot kick converted by Harry Taylor.
Tragically, substitute Billy Haylor broke his leg attempting a tackle 9 minutes into the 2nd half. Referee Ali Taylor abandoned the game after a half hour wait for an ambulance to arrive.
The game had been played in a sporting spirit up until the abandonment.
After the game, Billy said:
“Just want to say thank you Joe Rayner (W&B) and his lads for their help today. And a big old thank you to Stuart Woodmore and all the High Park lads who waited around for over 2 hours for the ambulance with me and an extra special thank you to Angela Woodmore and Eoin Tucker for taking turns in holding my leg so that I could lie down.
“Not the outcome we wanted, but it is what it is.”
Island Echo wishes Billy Haylor a full and speedy recovery from his injury.
