A Cowes man who was almost 3 times the drink-drive limit when he smashed into parked cars in Cowes has been banned from the roads for more than 2 years.
Joseph Marshall, 46, of Newport Road in Cowes, appeared before Magistrates for sentencing last week (9th June) having previously pleaded guilty to drink driving.
As previously reported by Island Echo, the collision, which occurred near Cowes Medical Centre, involved 3 vehicles. The defendant’s Volkswagen Touran collided with a parked MG, which then smashed into a Ford Transit.
The court heard that a resident living on Newport Road heard a loud bang. It was then that the witness contacted the Police and realised Marshall had crashed into her husband’s work van, which was described as a ‘write-off’.
When the Police arrived on scene, they found the defendant still present; however, when speaking to him, it was clear that he had consumed alcohol before the accident.
Marshall was then arrested and taken to Newport Police station, where he was breathalysed, providing an evidential result of 103 microgrammes – almost 3x the limit of 35.
Oscar Vincent, defending, told the court how Marshall was fully cooperative with the police, having provided a roadside test and happily got taken to Newport Police Station.
The court heard how Marshall has been working with the elite intervention of psychosis team for 2 years after admitting to using alcohol as a supplementary coping mechanism and suffering from crippling anxiety.
Magistrates disqualified Marshall from driving for 26 months and ordered him to pay an £80 fine and £85 costs, with a £114 surcharge. He must complete 20 rehabilitation days.
The 46-year-old was also ordered to complete a 6-month alcohol treatment requirement.
