The Ministry of Defence is investigating reports that a Russian naval vessel fired warning shots at a UK-registered yacht in waters south of the Isle of Wight earlier today (Tuesday).
The incident is said to have occurred at around 11:40 this morning in the English Channel, between the Isle of Wight and Normandy.
According to reports, the vessel involved was the Russian frigate Admiral Grigorovich.
It is understood that the yacht was approximately 20 nautical miles south of St Catherine’s Point, and therefore outside British territorial waters, when the warning shots were allegedly fired.
No injuries have been reported and there are no indications that the yacht suffered any damage.
The Ministry of Defence has confirmed it is investigating reports of an incident in the Channel.
The encounter comes just 2 days after Royal Marine Commandos and National Crime Agency officers boarded the sanctioned Russian shadow fleet tanker Smyrtos in the English Channel, around 25 miles south of the Isle of Wight.
Officials do not currently believe the 2 incidents are connected.

Bloody hell, we have Island Roads, IoW council, Starmers Army all attacking us, and now the bloody Russians are firing at us.. Time to get those sandbags loaded and tin hats passed around.
That was probably all the Royal Navy has currently working.
Didn’t know we still had a Navy, they sold Gunwharf off
years ago.
We can intercept a Russian Vessel but not boat loads of migrants funny that . . . !
The country obviously wants the migrants coming to our
shores, only they know why!
Obviously a secret
Apparently Russian Navy hasn’t heard of The International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea (aka ColRegs).
Here we go
Back in the USSR
I wonder if they will be playing that one at the festival
Lol
Something “fishy” going on here.
Jane Kelvey, 68, and her husband Alan, 70, were travelling on their 40ft yacht, Bright Future on Tuesday, moving from the coast of England towards France. They actually left Lymnington at 03.08. At a speed of 5.8kn, they are now just off Cherbourg 30 hours later
Recounting the incident on BBC Newsnight, Mrs Kelvey said the Russian ship gave out five blasts on the horn, which means “have you seen us” and we immediately turned two degrees to port.
Then a minute or so later they gave another five blasts on their horn, immediately followed by four to five small arms fire, which wasn’t aimed at us. Asked if they were afraid, she said: “I crouched down on the floor and tried to get my lovely canvas to protect me”.
Later in the interview, she said there were “no problems as far as we were concerned”. While Mr Kelvey said “It was just another day”. DOH!
I smell a rat.
Probably find them poisoned with radiation jn a few months like the Salisbury incident
The couple on the yacht got what they deserved absolutely clueless
Not entirely. According to their latest “news bulletin”, they are apparently on a “Booze-Cruise” and it is to be hoped that they don’t start sampling some of it on the return journey.
Although I would not bank on it!
Now “Jane” has given another two “interviews”, one to the I Newspaper and another to the Sun.
In the latter interview she states that had she had a gun, she would have fired back!
When will her 15 minutes be over?
Go away pootin!
One of my favourite films
