Fast food giant McDonald’s has announced that it is to close all of its UK and Ireland restaurants – including 2 here on the Isle of Wight- by the end of tomorrow.
Last week the company took the decision to close the seating areas in its 1,350 outlets up and down the country – a move that was reinforced by law when the Prime Minister announced the closure of all such establishments on Friday, save for takeaway options.
However, McDonalds has gone one step further to halt all drive-thru and takeaway operations and close the doors for the foreseeable future.
All McDonalds will close by 19:00 tomorrow at the latest with 135,000 employees affected.
It is unknown when the McDonalds outlets in Ryde and Newport will close exactly, or when they will re-open.
In a statement released tonight it has been said:
“We have taken the difficult decision to close all McDonald’s restaurants in the UK and Ireland by 19:00 on Monday 23rd March at the latest.
“This is not decision we are taking lightly but one made with the wellbeing and safety of our employees in mind as well as in the best interests of our customers.
“We will work with local community groups to responsibility distribute food and drink from our restaurants in the coming days.
“Thank you to our brilliant employees for their hard work during this incredibly challenging time.
“We look forward to seeing you all again as soon as it is safe for us to re-open”.

That’s one bit of good news then!
Yes but doesn’t help the employees who were on zero hour contract.
Well done mate! That’s right poor staff with no money.
I hope your over 70!
Less rubbish on the streets and hege rows now
70+! Hopefully
We will have a nation of slim, more healthy people !!
In a minute we wot be able to buy no food coz this virus
I see all the snobs on here all ready!! You won’t be able to get ya lobsters and quails eggs in minute either!! M&S will be shut!!
I cannot believe some of the comments on here!
A – the over 70’s are most at risk of dying from the pandemic – they are not to blame for it
B – by saying ‘I hope you’re over 70’ is basically saying ‘ I hope that you die’
C – if staff have lost their jobs then they will go on unemployment benefit, like the rest of us (I’m losing my job in a few days)
D – surely its better for ex-staff to be alive at the end of all this (albeit poorer)
For goodness sake – be compassionate people.
Good, less garbage thrown out of car windows.. the demise of fast food takeaways is a good impact of the environment I’m well pleased
OMG muvvers might have to cook for their charity kept offspring, AND look after and entertain what they bred too. If only they had to ‘pay’ instead of being paid to produce clones then maybe they would be more inclined to use contraception next time.
