Another walker stuck in the mud in St Helens was able to free themselves from the ooze before the arrival of The RNLI and HM Coastguard earlier today (Monday). The alarm was raised for a walker in the Priory Bay area at around 13:00 with HM Coastguard crews from Ventnor and Bembridge – as well as Bembridge RNLI’s lifeboat – called to the East Wight beauty spot. Upon arrival however, there was no need to don the mud rescue gear with it established that the involved had managed to free themselves and was found to be safe and well. This was the 2nd time that walkers had become stuck in the mud in 2 days and the 4th in 8 days following a double header last weekend – as previously reported by Island Echo.
“We have some lovely coastal and beach walks in Hampshire and the Isle of Wight and want people to be able to enjoy these safely. “Following the recent rescues on the Isle of Wight at the weekend we would highlight the need for people to be cautious when exploring our coastline. The ground is extremely muddy in places and it can be difficult to judge how stable the surface is or just how deep the mud is. “We urge people to take extra care while enjoying our coastline, to stick to the paths, follow any local warnings and ensure you have a mobile phone with you.”

Why are folk so devoid of common sense?
Oh come on….this is getting ridiculous now.
Would it not be a good idea to erect a closure to the area due to this is a very frequent occurrence of late!
Should be something up!! Like warnings for daft people?
Another idiot, they should be made to pay for the cost of the rescue & more !!!!
Are these local people? Probably not.
How stupid can you get?
Common sense should tell you that it’s
dangerous Just by looking at it? it’s all muddy and slippery.
I can’t understand why there is no warning on the ferries and a plethora of visible signage on the island, especially now the holiday season has started and many guests have dogs.
Most holiday guests do not read our local online news papers
This must be a very frightening experience, potentially dangerous and puts the rescue crew at risk.
I agree with you. Such a simple thing to do, and no cost.
Jeez what is it with people, are they thicker than the mud they get stuck in? Waste of the rescuers time and money, stick some signs up and leave the stupid walkers to it.
Well said I totally agree with you.
What the hell is wrong with people? If you see mud, you don’t go and deliberately walk in it do you? unless it’s the latest trend to get attention. It’s not rocket science and has the same logics as DO NOT EAT THE YELLOW SNOW FFS. With so many call outs over the last few days, makes you wonder doesn’t it? Rescuers should start charging for their services for such gormless stupidity, see how soon it phases out
Let’s hope you’re never caught out by stepping on mud that looks like stone.
Well, if I was caught out by stepping in mud that looked like a stone, do you think I would be gormless enough to keep on walking in mud that looked like stones until I was up to my waist in it FFS.
Those bone idle lot in the council can’t be bothered to print up a handful of laminated signs warning people of the dangers of mud, so have cost us by using the emergency services for nothing.
Don’t they realise that whilst wasting time here, some illegals may have required a free taxi ride into the UK?
Second thoughts the mud larks cost and lasting damage to the UK is minimal compared….
Good job not everyone is as bitter and twisted as you. Your taxi ride comments are totally misplaced on this news article.
Come on people, don’t be so harsh. It’s the start of holiday season, they could be holiday makers. Even if they are islanders, do you think they wanted to get stuck? It must be terrifying to not be able to get out.
I walked from St Helens to Ryde a couple of weeks ago when the tide was out, I could have been one step away from getting stuck but it never crossed my mind. Let’s be kind and compassionate to their plight, and very grateful to their rescuers.
Holiday season yippee, let’s walk around in mud, muppets
Well said, Claire.
What? Another one?!!
I have a good idea I am going to see where the idiots got stuck in the mud….
Leave them in the mud that will give enough publicity to other morons who want to follow
Probably another brainless Caulkhead
It should be out of bounds and closed off now before there is a tragedy as people obviously ignore warnings.
There aren’t any Warnings.
I’ve lost count of the number of times this has happened over the last couple of weeks. Wouldn’t it be sensible and cheaper to erect warning signs rather than having to keep calling out the emergency services to rescue people who for some reason choose to walk through mud rather than round it.
I see our Island experts are out in force again – judging, insulting, advising, condemning.
None of those trapped is stupid – they simply went walking and were unfamiliar with the terrain, thanks to a lack of signage and, probably, maintenance or awareness of the paths, many of which have fallen into the sea anyway now.
Welcome to the Isle of Wight – where open minds and humility is in very short supply.
Never underestimate peoples ability to do very silly and odd things, just look around, it isn’t just the ‘mud larks’ in the ‘silly club’!.. remember the 3 point turn episode on the Needles Road!
I wonder if these are the same people who park their cars upside down!
