A fundraiser has been launched to help support businesses in Cowes that have been left devastated by this week’s flooding. Paul, Mark, Zoe and Rebecca of The Cowes Network have donated an initial £500, with a view to reaching a fundraising total of £5,000 to support local businesses in their hour of need. As first reported by Island Echo, one of the highest-ever recorded tides hit late on Monday night and into Tuesday morning, resulting in flood water surging through the High Street and into commercial properties. Paul Thorley, who has launched the fundraiser, has said:
“Due to the location of these properties, many business can’t be insured or, if they can be, carry a high excess with multiple exclusions. “The High Street is vital to Cowes, its residents, its visitors and the local economy. With proud and hard-working business owners who for no fault of their own have incurred costs, disruption, extra work and loss of business. “It’s another blow, after COVID lockdowns and all the associated problems that caused to small business and just as the economy is recovering, the holiday season is upon us, this is the last thing they needed”.
You can contribute to the fundraiser at https://www.gofundme.com/f/helping-business-effected-by-the-cowes-flooding.
Paul adds:
“The Cowes network was formed to promote the amazing businesses and people of Cowes, but to also use our network to help where we can. To start this fundraiser, we are donating an initial £500 and sharing to our community. “Please, if you can support this, donate what you can and feel and share amongst your friends and network and collectively – let’s come together and help these amazing business owners. “All monies raised will be given to businesses on the High Street that are directly affected by this flooding”.
At the time of publishing £650 has been raised, with a target of £5,000.

“Due to the location of these properties, many business can’t be insured or, if they can be, carry a high excess with multiple exclusions. ”
Do you even bother to read the articles, or do you just go straight to the knee jerk reaction?
Tough. We are not a charity, do we get any of their profits?
Many of these businesses make lots of money.
Well sad just read what his brain could see “zilch” and made himself look a right womble.!.
Rule 1. Always read the article before commenting
“Due to the location of these properties, many business can’t be insured or, if they can be, carry a high excess with multiple exclusions”
if you need help I can recommend “Biff and Chip” it helped my children a lot.
Exactly.
Had an accident that is not your fault.?
Don’t buy insurance, start a GoFudMe and let poor people give their last bit of spare cash after reading the sob story.
Should be band.
Someone else who can’t read or write properly.
Imagine being you. Sad
Read the whole story and take spelling lessons!.
You clearly can’t read can you which I guess is part of society’s problem.
Genuinly feel sorry for you
My Cowes are you the sad lonely person who walks two dogs must me early 50’s now that’s sad
Do you mean”Be Kevvy”? You must be running a temperature no mention of old anywhere? The lie down in a dark room in a custom jacket worked well then!.
I was going to say the same but you nailed it.
Too many businesses overcharge customers for the cheap tac they sell
then they want people to bail them out.
They can fcuk right off
Cheek. You can get flood insurance specifically for businesses in flood plains, it just costs. I’m terribly sorry about the flooding and have sincere sympathy but more so with home owners. For businesses, if you can afford to operate a business in one of the most affluent and expensive places on the Island, you can afford the insurance. Quick Google search will show you some options.
Here’s an idea. Pop down to one of the affected shops and give your vast business acumen to these people.
Vast something and I suspect it begins with same letter as acumen!
A target of only £5,000 between them? So they can’t afford or get insurance yet none have the sense to put aside a tiny bit of money for such occasions?
The entitlement, ffs
Hold up…you want cash strapped public too donate too the overpriced rich shop owners in Cowes high street cos of flooding? A go fund me p..s take ? Yet another? Insurance is a thing IE!
Why would we give them our money!!! Ludicrous.
Im sick too death of all these go fund me scams going about.
There your problems…NOT OURS
Majority of the shops affected are selling overpriced trash
What a joke!!! Go fund me scams should be banned
Amazing how much this upsets you.
I’m glad I’m not you
yawn……
everything is great, I support the collections, it’s a noble cause. But what is the state doing at the moment? Why not? We will ask the government to help
The area has been flooding since records began. Everyone else has to insure their properties and businesses. Some people can’t afford their electricity bills, or mortgages and rent. Seems a bit of an ask to get people to cough up for this cause. Ask the people who own the ridiculously overpriced properties along the waters edge to fork the bill instead of normal working people.
