FLY TIPPING BRANDED ‘MOST DISGUSTING’ BY COUNCILLOR AS CASES CONTINUE TO RISE

Published at:

Islanders are being reminded to only use waste carriers with the correct licence following a rise in the number of cases of fly tipping across the Isle of Wight.

One incident has been shared on Facebook this week by Shanklin and Sandown Golf Club, who are trying to track down whoever dumped rubbish on their land. Pictures show black bags and shop signs, along with other waste, behind the clubhouse.

Speaking at a meeting of the Isle of Wight Council’s corporate scrutiny committee, Councillor Richard Hollis said he viewed it as a very serious crime and a “most disgusting, anti-social habit”.

Figures in an update on the waste contract provided to the committee, show between April and September 2020, there were 41 requests to the council’s waste team regarding fly tipping.

As part of cost-cutting measures, Island Roads now have 7 days to respond to reports of fly tipping where as previously they had to clear the rubbish within 24 hours, as previously reported by Island Echo.

The council’s strategic manager for waste and environment, Natasha Dix, urged people to only use contractors who have a licence to properly dispose of waste and not someone who would dump the rubbish. She said:

“All waste carriers, that is anyone who collects waste from a household, must have a waste carrier’s licence.

“These are registered with the Environment Agency and there is an open register that all householders can check that the person picking up their waste is registered.

“Only waste that is carried by a waste carrier can be taken to any of the commercial or council owned-waste treatment sites on the Island.

“There are people who do not understand their obligations to pick up waste and  when they collect things are turned away from places such as the recycling centres and commercial waste centres because they don’t have waste carrier’s licences and are illegally collecting waste from households.”

Mrs Dix also said households should ask for a waste transfer note when someone collects their rubbish. It should say what has been collected and residents should note down the number plate and the company who take the waste away.

Natasha added:

“If you see it on the Isle of Wight fly tipping Facebook page then you can quickly identify if it was your waste and we can properly investigate those people.

“If we all go through those measures, every fly tip can be traced back, apart from those who are individually disrespecting their community and dumping things outside their doorsteps.”

To report fly tipping you can either fill in a form at www.iow.gov.uk/iwforms/form.aspx?k=flytip or phone waste services on 01983 823777 and the council will find out whose responsibility it is to have it removed and ensure it is dealt with quickly.

Years ago the tip was free. NOW we pay more council tax, and have to ‘pay’ again at the tip, despite the recycle of much making money.

So, the tip should be free, and try employing less people up there. Too many staff, just directing traffic, and waiting to inform you of what you ‘can’t now dump, as if we were carrying Nuclear waste.

This whole council needs to be gone, and SOON.

Yet our council tax will rise AGAIN. Wake up and SEE where many of these issues stem from, then vote them OUT.

It was indeed free and its loss is an obvious stupidity in local governance but these were minimised by the certain knowledge that a police officer might appear. But the fat controllers discovered that they could get away with their removal from our streets and country lanes and save millions. However theTRUE cost is now apparent!

The tip is free , you just have to go online to book a slot well organised, friendly staff and very helpful. Honestly don’t know where you got the idea you have to pay. Even if you have a van you have to phone up , they will send you out a card with 12 trips to the dump and that’s free as well. It’s run better now than before don’t have to queue up for long either.

Sadly not surprising given that the tip is an absolute nightmare now days. No excuses for fly tipping but make it easier to deal with waste and these problems will resolve themselves.

Well put, this council seem to want to make it difficult to use the ca sites . It ran perfectly well for years before Amey took over.

These people are the scum of society. I don’t want to hear excuses about the tip, or that you have to pay for certain items. No excuses- vile idiots

This website is inhabited by complete morons. I genuinely fear for the future of the IOW when people with such low intelligence are regularly posting on this website. The tip is free you complete idiots. Commercial waste has to be paid for but it always has been. Domestic waste can be taken to the tip for FREE. The appointment system was brought in because of covid and not because Amey wanted to make it more difficult. You people really are beyond help…
