A flood alert has been issued by the Environment Agency (EA) for the St Johns area of Ryde today (Saturday). The Environment Agency is warning that Flooding is possible for: Monktonmead Brook at St Johns Road, St John’s Station and Park Road. The water level in the Monktonmead Brook at St John’s Station is high and rising. In the last 7 hours 15mm of rain has been recorded in Ryde. Whilst this may be a modest amount but follows weeks of wet weather which is making the river much more responsive than normal. Flooding of property is not expected at this time. A spokesperson from the Environment Agency has said:
“Our operational staff are keeping the Monktonmead Brook clear of blockages. “We continue to monitor the forecast.
This Flood Alert will be removed by 19:00 this evening.

And the winds are blowing through this afternoon too!
I suspect the staffing shortages are linked to the need to give shift days off ahead of the busy bank holiday weekend.
Not that either company is capable of being transparent about such issues
Beyond a joke now poor commuters and hospital patients

Why hasn’t this been set up as a UK Government petition? If a petition on the official UK Government’s website gets over 10,000 signatures, it has to be debated in Parliament. An opportunity has been missed.
Not correct – if it gets 10,000 signatures “the government will respond”
If it gets 100,000 signatures “it will be considered for debate in Parliament”
Population of the island approx. 130,000 with many of these children a petition would probably fail to reach the threshold.
The feasibility study needs to be done and this means the Council needs to forego it’s “discounts” and ask for the money (which has been available from government for a long time) OR some astute businesses/persons to have a punt and donate anonymously.
These discounts are paid for by the “Joe Bloggs” of this world in higher individual fares
I did a petition..but nother comes of it..
If you are delayed for more than an hour then claim compensation! The only way to hurt them is if it costs them money! This is from the gov.uk website:
Compensation offeredFerry passengers are entitled to 25% of the ticket price for late arrival if the delay is as follows:
If a delay is twice as long as the timings set out above, you’re entitled to a refund of 50% of the ticket price.
Compensation of £5 or less will not be paid.
Your ferry or cruise operator must pay the compensation within one month.
I’m pretty sure that doesn’t apply to IOW ferries
Yes it does. Claimed many times
Yes it does. Red Funnel even mention it on their website.
that only applies if you have had departure and arrival times specified in your travel contract.Wightlinks fasctat t and c will state that times shown in timetables are estimates only and not part of the agreement. So no, it is unlikley that you will get anything and also – if the delays are unavoidable, despite their best efforts, you aren’t entitled to anything.
Same as delayed flights. Lack of crew is the get out of jail free card.
From Red Funnel’s own website: https://www.redfunnel.co.uk/service-disruption-claims
I was just wondering if anyone has asked both the ferry companies what they actually think of the service (or lack of service) they are providing? There doesn’t seem to be a day go by that doesn’t include a cancellation due to staffing, mechanical or maintenance issues. That is basically poor administrative management across the board.
they have cut staffing down to the bare minimum – this means that in the event of someone being off at short notice, there is no cover available. Overtime is voluntary and as they expect staff to already work longer days, they are unwilling to work on their rest days. Ships crews cannot work on some rest days, as they are legally required to have at least 10 hours in a 24 hour period between shifts and work no more than a certain number of hours a week.
there is no safety net built into staffing as it used to be.
If you asked Fran Collins what she thinks about the service Red Funnel are providing, she will tell you they are providing a brilliant service. That’s because she does nothing but lie and comes out with all manner of corporate “spin”. It is long past time that she was sacked.
It’s quiet so they won’t run empties
it’s only a matter of time before they shorten the time tables
What do we want ?
A reliable service at sensible prices
When do we want it ?
Now !
it’s gone very quiet from our MP’s !!!!!
That is because the MPs are
Powerless, Useless and Clueless.
“All the makings for a perfect MP”
They themselves travel free on both crossings
Wightlink or Red Funnel, compliments of us
tax payers paying their extortionate
expense claims.
In the past we only had 1 MP on the island to pay for,
now we have 2 to pay for.
No wonder our Council tax keeps going up!
Your council tax doesn’t pay for MPs.
There all sit all lier’s all corrupt all useless ..
‘Dead Funnel and Shite Link’ up to the usual operational standard i see. Just wait until the tourist season ends in a few weeks time and ‘Dead Eagle’ finally gives up limping across the Solent. Dead Funnel will be down to 2 boats, then wait for the ‘technical failures/weather failures/staffing failures’ to stack up and they will be down to one boat during the winter….and then the fun starts.
It seems the goose that lays the golden eggs is well and truly being butchered by these ferry services. With tourism as a major part of the Island economy I cannot see many of those who have taken holidays this year and had their travel plans destroyed by these greedy and inept duopolies that hold this Island to ransom.
Thats not even considering the daily disruption to Island residents travel plans. Additionally clogging the roads of East Cowes, now on a daily basis.
Has anyone in the council estimated the actual monetary impact this shambles is having on the economy of the Island or is their calculator overheated from dealing with the floating bridge shambles?
No too thick and stupid keep throwing money at the floating turd,.Has it broken down lately been away from this dump country.
Yes it did after running for about 4 or so hours I suspect
This is interesting reading. You may be surprised at additional roles some of the directors of Red Funnel also hold in other Island companies.

When are we going to get a tunnel properly with access road from M27 to Meon or Hill Head and get rid of the Gunwharf Keys ferry which brings traffic through Portsmouth with the associated pollution.
We don’t want even more cars and enormous trucks coming to this small island.
You want to have your cake and eat it. You can’t bleat about the cost and reliability of the ferries at the same time as bleating about visitor numbers if we had the cheap and reliable crossing most Islanders want.
If we had £50 flat price return on reliable ferries it would cause the same increase in visitors numbers as a £50 flat price return via a tunnel.
They also leave the island, .so you want to be exclusive and don’t consider the needs of young people who need jobs and a future
I’m sure that’ll go down well with Hill Head and Meon residents. You’ve got two chances…Fat and No!
Anyone heard anything from Quigley?,
he’s hardly know as Quickly!
Build a Bridge, personally I am fed up hearing about
these shite Ferry Companies
IT’S ABOUT TIME UBER WERE RUNNING A CROSS SOLENT
FERRY SERVICE!, MUCH CHEAPER AND MORE RELIABLE
The current Companies only have to Fart and they cancel a Ferry
Crossing.
The island is a joke.
Is there no end to the moaning IOW residents.
Stop your whingeing and do something about it. Spineless residents, not even prepared to take matters into their own hands by peacefully blockading the island ferry ports. Cause chaos on the mainland and the problem might be looked at.
In the meantime, just keep moaning because that’s all IOW people are good at.
Bit of a goon then like that’s going to do anything…
Just carry on moaning then, but keep it to yourself.
The same could be said for the rest of the UK population. Most apathetic country in the world.
Oh dear, Curly, complaining again? Your speciality – complaining.
What us islanders want is cheaper Ferry fares and a better
service.
So let’s cut out the middle man and have a bridge built. Put a toll on it and minimise the size of vehicle which can use it. The larger vehicles can then use the ferries(merge the two companies together).
You’ll still get your usual visitors to the island, islanders can also get on and off easily and cheaply and everyone will be happy. Simples.
That’s a great idea, enough is enough.
The funding would have to be from central government, it would need to be located where there is no through sea traffic, which means West Wight. The toll even ti maintain the investment probably close to ferry prices islanders pay for pre paid tickets. I think it has been looked into many times and most islanders don’t seem to even want a fixed link.
Having crossed even at peak times recently, the ferries don’t run full and often not even half full as family holiday makers have been priced out. A bit of a downward spiral. I predict both are struggling to make summer profits that will keep the winter timetable going so there will be fewer and fewer crossings. You could compare to Isle of Man Steam Packet.
You’ve got four bridges crossing from England to Wales, all now free as the toll system paid for them.
if a bridge won’t be built, then it’s time to merge the two ferry companies, get rid of the stakeholders and have a fixed price for crossings 24/7.
And the emergency ser ices could also get here quicker as the Island seems to have sacrificed a lot of them
